Height of sidepipes off the ground

Hi,

I am building my own operational sidepipes and currently looking at positioning. The OD of the large pipe that I am using is 4". I am thinking of having the bottom of the pipe 40mm higher than the bottom of the chassis (lowest point of the car) so this would make the bottom of the pipes about 150-160mm off the ground, is this inline with what you guys with similar pipes have?

It's very hard to work out height from a looks and stance perspective when the car is on jack stands.

I put a straight edge (broom handle) across the bottom of the chassis rails.

The Kirkham has the bottom of the 4' side pipe only 10mm higher than the bottom of the round chassis rails.
With my new ride height 4.5" at the front and 5.5" at the rear, the bottom of the side pipe is 140mm off the ground.

Mine are lower than the chassis.
Probably by about 30mm I think.
I have no issues with them scraping.

Interesting. I have some boards in place for fitting up, hard up against the chassis rails, so I need to decide how far further up to raise the pipe.

IMHO you don't want to see the chassis under the pipes.
And you don't want the car sitting high like a land cruiser either

mine are as yours are fitted [ mocked ] as I can get a jack under [ low profile ] but not see the chassis or the side mounts for the body
look at how you are going to mount as well

Keep the lowest point on the pipes a few mm above chassis rail to avoid any unforeseen scrap situations, thats all you need to do...lower looks much better in my opinion.

My pipes are below chassis rail height (about 20mm from memory), They are also lower at the front than the back, as I wanted pipes level, but car on an angle that was pleasing to the eye.

Thanks for the replies and pics fellas. I have decided to go 20mm up from the bottom of the chassis for the bottom of the 4" pipe - the 4-into-1 collector is a little larger than 4" so that will eat up a few mm as the lowest point initially, and I will be having heat shields so might lose 10mm on the 4" pipe there.

Im really interested to see the practical side of running side pipes. Speaking with Kent who has a Kirkham, we were talking about the risk of burning by a member of the public sticky beaking. I am considering running mine with electric valve to switch to rears if the need is there, but yet to investigate what heat shields are available, how effective, and how ugly they are...look forward to researching this soon!

so that's height sorted....but what about body to pipe clearance, just making mine at mo...if I align tip with outside edge of tyre as you look down car gives about 30mm gap between muffler and fibre glass body...is that about right?

As long as you can get a sponge in behind for washing you will be fine.
Mine are about 30mm from memory.

Are side pipes legal in South Australia?
I haven't gone into it yet with my engineer. I'm thinking of wrapping the whole side pipes with Kevlar look wrap.
