What are my engine choices
Hi
While im making up my mine as to which kit to purchase I was also wondering
What are my choices for engines and size and manual gearboxes.
One motor in particular I like is the Coyote 5.0ltr but I also like the mustang 5.0 ho motors, so many choices what are everyone else is using to get emissions approval?
Any information is most welcome
P.s. How do I join the Cobra Club Qld, Do I need to be a member of a club to get a Cobra registered in Qld.

Not sure about your emissions down under, but Cashburn on this site is tinkering with the Coyote's and I find them most interesting....

Engine choice is really up to you. Lots of Cobra's have small and big block ford engines. Plenty of 5.0 out there too. Some choose to put a chevy in. It's really what you what. I changed engines in mine and went with a higher horsepower small block, a 351 stroked to 408. I wanted more power but something streetable. You can get 351's to 427 too or you can get a big block and go bigger. So many choices it's a hard decision. A friend tried to talk me into a new 5.0 but I'm old fashioned, nothing sounds better than a pushrod engine with a healthy cam so I went that route. Good luck with your choice. Whatever you decide, it will all be good.

Warren or Craig at Absolute Pace can give you a complete list of what power plants comply with ADRs. Then it's up to you.
As far as joining the Club, you don't say where you're located but if you're in the south-east, the best thing to do is to come along to our monthly breakfasts on the first Sunday of the month at the Red Rock cafe at the Hope Island shopping centre. Cars arrive 7.30, we eat at 8.

Definitely not, but by joining a club - and one as active as the QLD club - you'll get plenty of good advice, make some good contacts and hopefully make some friends along the way. That's been my experience down here in Vic, even though I don't get to nearly enough meetings or events as I would like.
As for engine choice, the short answer is anything that meets your state regulations for an ICV. I would speak to an engineer about that.

Well this is one hilarious thread.. Lucky our friend Mr Shelby finished up at Ford and had a life long relationship there..
Aussie cars that intend to be street registered need to meet the emissions codes specified in the ICV regs, which equate roughly to the 2000 ADR standards. So cats are required and the total vehicle noise on a drive by at around 3700 rpm must not exceed 90dB. The engines must also be an AU designated unit.. ie, for an approved Aussie street vehicle, that has passed a relevant emissions standard or the RTA simply wont recognise it.
That said the 5.4L Falcon motor sold here (prior to the 5.0L coyote) is a very difficult engine to get past emissions, is apparently fairly dirty. The 5.0L is a big motor, with dual OH cams, but is possible in an FFR kit at least, although I've not seen the mods to the engine bay in detail.. .
If you are building a track car.. then go for broke with a small block full house crate motor from the US with stack injection and a matched cam.. I know I would..
I have an LS3 for my FFR Coupe and would love to be able to fit a set of alloy covers to it (my turn for a very naive question now.. !!). Was the comment re an FE valve cover comment for real..?

On a serious note: have you decided on Kit yet? Did you settle on a PACE or go with Harrison a kit? And whats your intended objective?
If you want cheap power an LS is hard to beat.
If you want "heritage" (whatever that means) then ford the obvious choice.
If you want to be different BMW v8 or Toyota's V8 make for a great engine. |
