15" tyres - Australian fitment

What brand 15" tyres, and more importantly what speed rating, are being fitted to Cobra replicas to satisfy registration requirements (in Aus.)? Important to know which engine / what power output as well.
Cheers,
Glen

Hi Glen,

I have a brand new set of Avon CR6ZZ 15" tyres for my Pace 427SC. The sizes are 245/295 front/rear on 7.5" and 9.5" pin drive Trigos respectively.

My engine is a 600hp LSA supercharged V8. The tyres are V speed rated at 240kmh and my engineer at Engelmans Victoria assures he will pass my car with these tyres.

You can stencil them up with AVON lettering and some guys have even done the Goodyear Eagle stenciling on them too. I will probably go with AVON at the 12 and 6 o clock positions.

Cheers,
Sime

Strictly I believe the Avons are about the only 15" tyre that will now meet the speed rating for engineering.

Think I had H rated tyres at engineering and needed to think about replacement post engineering to go up one rating level to comply.

Though expensive, the Avons have the best grip of the 15" group available.

The Mickey Thompson STs 15" are rated to at least 180kmh, which is technically the legal registration requirement (afaik). Our engineer wasn't happy unless they were at least 200kmh, based in the fact the car was capable of much more than 180kmh.

Thanks Sime.
I had made the decision some time ago to use Avons for several reasons, one of which was the speed rating for registration requirements.
I wouldn't stencil GOODYEAR on an Avon though. That's like putting Corvette badges on a CSX Cobra
Can I ask where you sourced them?

Cheers,
Glen

Just cos I like looking at 'em...

Sime, notice they're not painted but Custom dye cut white rubber raised AVON letters glued on. They've come up pretty good in my book.
Just a thought for your consideration.

My engineer did a calculation of the engine power at given revs at the gearing and wanted H rated tyres(210kph) Its only a carby 302.

There was a good discussion mid to late last year on 15" tyres on the Aussie forum. Have a search see what you find, but it essentially came down to either Mickey Thompson or Avon.

I saw at a swap meet a tyre stall that had some odd 15' tyres aimed at hot rod market. Amongst them was a 295/50-15. Can't remember now but I think the brand was maybe Maxxis or Nexen or something like that.

I wouldn't be too tempted if you find a cheaper tyre as the money you spend on good ones is well worth it. The amount the average Cobra is driven the tyres will go hard before you wear them out, unless there is a reasonable amount of track work, then its worth having the better tyre.

Hi Glenn,

You're most welcome! I sourced them from Stuckey Tyres in Coburg Vic. They are motorsport tyre dealers. I dealt directly with Russell Stuckey the owner.

If you can't find the Avons in Adelaide, I'm sure Stuckey's can ship the tyres to you. Or maybe they go to race meets in Adelaide and can bring them to you? I recall they were around $2400 the set fitted and balanced although if you're not having them fitted it might be cheaper. But they do know how to fit and balance them properly so it may behoove you to send them your wheels and let them fit them up and return ship them.

Anthony, thanks. I have seen those stick on letters before, but I'm not sure I'm a fan. I like the distressed look you get with the stencil and the fact that the white aerosol primer they suggest to use does go a little yellow with time, giving that aged look most of us crave. You get the same effect from the factory-applied paint on the Goodyears.

I'll add my vote for the Avons, they are the best all round 15 inch tyre I've tried on the cobra. MT street radials are very good in a drag race and apparently there is a new model out with stronger wall strength. I get them from Gordon Leven Motorsport at Emu Plains NSW.

Which wheel did you get ...the CHB classic or the GTD5?.

I've always wondered why aussies don't give these a thought when buying wheels.

albanycobra 04-02-2015 08:33 PM

I got GTD5. All satin black with classic hidden option. The Hey are for my GT40. Not using the fake spinners.

Could you post a side view pic of your cobra showing the front and rear CR6ZZ Avons fitted. I am interested to see how they fill the wheel arches before I re-commit myself.

That's 245/60 fronts and 295/50 rears?
Side-on picture would be good.

Cheers,
Glen

This is my favourite photo of the 245/295 Avon combination, with some nicely weathered in lettering...

...and I won't embed the image because it's massive; Damage's Kirkham has the same tyre combo
