You might struggle with the webber equipped 427. The motor will need to meet current emissions rules to pass and that motor won't no matter what you do to it.

Hi Mike,
Ok there u go I could have sworn I read in multiple places they had a live rear end I stand corrected I did know about the the transverse leaf setup on the 289. Yeah I know meeting modern emissions with a Webber setup would be near impossible another reason that got culled from the dream early in the peace.
Althought I believe if you were to get an older car with a carby engine for example. You only need to comply with the emission standards of the year of manufacture, but from what I have heard from Vic roads it a bit of a grey area. I wouldn't like to be the trial case with out some fairly hefty re assurances from Vic roads that it would meet compliance at $700+ ago you don't want it too fail too many times.
Thanks for setting me straight on the rear end.
Cheers Andrew

It would need to be an early 80's? build. By '90 when I bought my kit, you needed to be emissions compliant or use gas.

Interestingly I called Vic Roads recently about changing from gas back to petrol too see what they said. They didn't ask me the year of the car or anything. They just said all I needed was a letter from a mechanic stating that all the LPG equipment had been removed so they could update their records. I thought this was very strange given how emission controls have progressively tighten in the last 15 yrs.

It is unlikely that you will have been given accurate advice about the compliance aspects on that call.
I am aware of VicRoads requiring a cobra owner to fit a late model efi engine in place of the existing carby engine the car was purchased with (from interstate) - because the date of manufacture did not align with the engine installed (updating the induction was not sufficient). This was after a number of years of rego in Vic.
There are many levels of complication and an ad-hoc call to a customer service at VicRoads will not resolve them.
Good luck with your search.
Have you been in touch with the Vic Club?

Hi LoBelly
I have been speaking to one of the blokes from the club about this. I rang Vic Roads and got through to what I thought to the right department. As he had to go and confirm his answer with someone else. So I guess my next question is who do I need to speak to to get a reasonably straight answer as they are few and far between at VicRoads. It defys me how we are supposed to do the right thing if you can't get the right answer from them.
So was the engine swap required to transfer the car to Vic registration from interstate? The reason for asking this is I have also spoken to VicRoads regarding what is required to change over registration from WA to Vic and again I have been told by VicRoads it is just a matter of filling out the forms paying the money and it done. They did say they may need to site the car to confirm the VIN number if it isn't on record with WA. BTW the whole time I made them aware of what the car is.
Very interesting

Maybe get it in writing / email format then I guess you have a case to argue when it comes time to register?

The answer to your question is, a VicRoads ceritifed VASS engineer. Get a VASS engineer to provide you the advice, they do this for a living.

Keep your pants on
Snakes away, replied to your message, sorry don't get on the forum much these days.
Yes my car is for sale I am currently just doing some maintenance and then needs some pretty serious detailing to get it looking pretty again.
Its still a great car but certainly is showing some serious use.
Phil
