Yes, it definitely was Chevrolet that started the small block thin wall revolution way back in the '50s, so Ford had to jump on board with its own lightweight (thin wall) small block.
....but which engine was it that finally beat Ferrari at its own game in the World Sportscar Championship for GT cars? It was Ford's small block 289.
And which engine was it that beat Porsche for outright at Le Mans in 1968 and 1968? Fords small block 302.
The only other production block engine I can think of that's got anywhere near that sort of world stage performance record is BMW's M10 based four cylinder turbo engine, winning the F1 championship in 1983. Now that's successful!
Maybe the BWM turbo engine would be a good idea in a Cobra! 
Hmm...no, I'll stick with my SBF

Not taking anything away from Ford's GT40 Lemans wins but don't forget that Chevrolet didn't have a factory entry in most of those races back in the 60's. They had a corporate ban on racing. All of the chev motors racing were in the hands of privateers like Jim Hall and his Chaparrals.
Ford wanted to make a point of kicking Ferrari's but due to the failed takeover. Plenty of money was thrown at that program.

Have I got this correct? Your crowing that in 1964 a specially built car powered by a 4.7ltr motor, designed in 1962, beat a road going car designed in late 1961 and powered 3.0ltr motor designed in 1947. Well it didn't. Ferrari won the Championship.
I've sent your details to the boys in Calabria. Expect a visit.

Well I thought it was a big deal that Shelby whipped Enzo's pants, so my dad bought me that little green Cobra in my avatar.

Oh, you were referring to 1965 when Ferrari didn't run a 'Works' GT team and Ford just managed to beat some untalented playboy privateers in 4 year old Ferraris.
Why would your father buy you a roadster when it is the Daytona that just scraped in.

Sheesh... that's not hard at all...
FORD have pretty much WON everything at every level of auto-racing across just about every category I can think of: From World rally Champs, to NASCAR & Oval racing, to Indycar, to F1 to Aus touring car, to European touring car, to LeMan, to... blah blah blah.
I don't know of another manufacturer that can make such a claim...
Honda perhaps? But I've got a lot of respect for Honda too, they make more engines than just about anyone else on a global scale - Don't just think cars, think motorbikes, and boats.... Even garden gear like chainsaws, lawnmowers, weed hackers... |
