I reckon the rules must have been relaxed at some point in the past. Probably an approved production car somewhere with heim joints used as an example.

i had two heim joints on my jag rear end holding the rods from the diff to the chassis all that was said back then 19809's was they had to have a rubber boot over them . you couldnt buy the boots back then so i used some rubbers off some tie rod ends i had lying around. the engineer was happy with that ..
