Default ADSL connection - line filter required for each phone point in house?

I've finally had enough of my dial-up connection. www.netspace.net.au have a $49.95 / month / 1gig package which I think sounds fair. (What do you think?) You can use it past 1 gig, but you fall back to dial-up speeds. At least this way they don't hit you with an excess useage charge.

Anyway, in the fine print it mentions that a line filter is required for EVERY phone point in the house, and they supply 1 with the setup kit. We have 4 phone points in the house, and that's going to add $100- to the install cost......

Has anyone tried using ADSL without the line filters at each phone?

Thanks for any advice....

Also, this is in the fine print also:

• Multiple concurrent ADSL log-ins to a single account permitted, but only until Allowed Usage per Month is reached – then access speed limits and single log-in limit applies. Data downloads by multiple concurrent log-ins are aggregated for charging purposes.

Does this mean that someone at another house can "share" my ADSL connection, as long as we don't go over the useage limit? That sounds like a cheap way to offset costs with others!

OR... must they come from the same phone line ie: same house - different computer?

Because your ADSL is installed as an overlay service on your regular telephone line, it's designed to let you talk at the same time as being connected to the network; this creates line noise.

If you want to use your ADSL phone line for voice you have to have a line filter for each phone outlet that is on the same line.

There is nothing special about them, just little pip cables with a filter box attached.

$12.00 each from these guys...

Thanks Ron. OK, I'm being tight here......does that mean that as long as I only talk from the phone with the filter attached while I'm using the internet, it'll be fine?

I'm thinking that I'd like to unplug the ADSL modem when I'm not using the computer to keep the nasties away. Is this reasonable?

Ron - a further point of clarification. I'm more than happy to spend $5K+ to upgrade from supercharger to twin turbos, but I can't stand the thought of spending a couple of lousy dollars on my computer. I hope you can understand my priorities....

Interesting question..not a simple answer.
If they allow multiple log-ins with the same account, then, I guess, another location could get access; of course, they would also need a DSL modem.

They would have to be within the usable range of the DSL service, though. Residential ADSL is a hokey way of pumping data on top of a voice line and has limitation with respect to the distance from the nearest phone company switch.

Multiple users in the same house would use one login and a router/hub, attached to the DSL modem.

of course...
but the high-speed line will be oh-so-much of an improvement over dial-up.

OK - the person I was thinking of is about 25 miles from me, so that probably wouldn't work. I just noticed that your filter link was to an Aussie site.

Mate, you're just too efficient!!!!

There's definitely some multi talented Cobra men out there.

Craig, if you ever want a bridge or tunnel building, I'm your man!

Careful - my mother always warned me to be wary of people trying to sell me bridges. It'd be nice if you could build a big deck for the back of my house though... By the sounds of what you do, it might end up a little heavily over-engineered!!!
