Snkbte,
as you can see the dark side has practically taken over. I tossed the engine choices around for quite a while before finally deciding on a 5.0L. As we probably are all aware, youd be hard pressed to go passed the LS1, they have practically everything you could want and more. The guy whos building my motor was installing a kit from the USA to convert the LS1 to a 427. He told me there would be no external alterations when completed. It doesnt get any better than that. In the end I chose Ford because they were originally built with Ford motors, and the look of the motor goes more in keeping with a car of that era. If these things dont concern you then an LS1 is a perfect choice.

Mando...exactly my thoughts.

I went ford because thats what they had in the originals.

If it weren't for that thought..then the LS1 would be my choice also.

Now...dont you dare tell any of those dark side fellas .

Your Honour, the victim was heard to say "If it weren't for that thought..then the LS1 would be my choice also." and shortly after was found beaten to death.

From the pathologst report we believe multiple wapons were used. An XC Falcon bumper bar, a Ford Cleveland rocker cover and the jack handle from a 1962 Ford Cortina.

G'day All

Just found out, from FPV, that a Boss 290 dry by itself weights
only 276kg. Now that's a heavy donk! Especially when a LS1 with auto weighs about 208kg. So a Boss gives a LS1 about 100-120kg head start.

Ahhrr stuff the diet, I'll just put in a LS1 instead!

I believe in 2005 Ford are introducing an all new Helium filled engine block as part of their weight reduction program.

It aint the weight that the only problem.....that thing is one wide motor.

You would end up with bugger all footboxes.

I don't think the Boss motor is doing the BA Falcon XR8 too many favours in the performance stakes.

The 1/4 mile times for the Boss 260 equiped 2004 XR8 Ute which is rated at 260KW at the crank is 14.9

The 290KW Boss 290 powered BA Pursuit does 14.4 along with the new FPV-GT.

My 2002 XR8 Pursuit 250 ute shares virtually all the same running gear but uses the 250KW 347 Windsor motor. It turns the quater in 14.2

I think the extra weight in the front is probably the cause. All the road tests reckon the XR6 turbo is a much sweeter handling car because of the lighter front.

When the lease runs out on the Pursuit I think I'l replace the wifes Jag with an XR6 turbo.

There's 1/4 mile times for pretty much anything on the road here: 1/4 mile times

Also interesting to note the LS1 equiped HSV Maloo ute does the 1/4 in 14.4 yet it was rated at 245KW from memory.

I think 347 Windsor makes more torque than the LS1 in the maloo and the live axle in the Ford ute puts the power to the pavement better in a straight line.

Hi and welcome to the Australian 'clubcobra' forum.

My thoughts - my $.02 worth..

The LS1 option is the way to go, at the moment as the engineers and the registration branch in N.S.W appear to accept this configuration.

The LS2 is an option, but I feel you should talk with "Justbetter" as Garrett will give you an indication of the option to increase horsepower and at a reasonable cost.

So my thoughts here are to run with the LS1, get registration and then play. This will be well under the purchase of the LS2 if and when available.

The CR kit is very good. I have had the opportunity to check Aussie Mike's CR out and think the kit is excellent. I see Aussie Mike has come onto this "Thread" so you are right here.

In Melbourne Doug Pearce is involved in completing Cobras and painting them. Doug recently painted my Cobra - see gallery photos.



Doug will be at the Cobra Nationals in Goulbourn in early October. So I suggest that you meet up with him there.

Use this forum - particularly the "ALL COBRA TALK" to ask any questions as you progress. Don't forget Aussie Mike and BOXHEAD.

Again have fun. Hope to meet up with you at the Nationals.

As an interesting after thought to all this Light/Dark guff, why doesn't someone actually put the question to Vicroads in relation to Individually Constructed Vehicles??????

Oh hang on SOMEONE DID!!!!!!!!

If you all stop speculating and gather some hard facts (best gained in form of official letter or email) then you would know that there is leniency as to the build completion dates etc. for current vehicles under construction.

And NO! Ford motors are not a problem!!!!!

(all being said & done - Chevy is cheaper HP)

Snkbte,

I dont know what stage your at regarding organizing parts but if your interested Ive got the four upper and lower arms for the rear end which you could have. I noticed at CBC Bearings the other day theyve got AU rear end half shafts complete, including rubber boots on special for $120 per side. Obviously you need to find a diff, uprights and camber adjusters. I think that what they are!

I've got a diff center you can have. It's from an AU fairlane IRS so it's only 3.28-1 and a single wheeler but it's yours if you want it.

Thanks for he offer, I have not made any decisions yet. I'm feeling a little overwhelmed. Its a very steep learning curve!

I'm reading all I can find and spending far to many hours searching the net. I do not have an automotive background.

I want to make sure I do this correctly the first time round.

The good news is that Ian from Classic Revival called and my kit will be ready to pick up next weekend.

Snkbte,

Indeed you do have a steep learning curve!

My advise for what its worth, especially the fact that you say that you don't have detailed automotive knowledge skills is to keep things pretty much standard sticking as close to your kit manufaturer's recommendations.

Any tweeking can then be made once your car is up and running. Its not until you drive the car for a while that you realise what needs improving.

One thing for sure is that unless you are into serious trackwork a bog standard Cobra (if you can call them that) with its favourable power to weight ratio is a deadly weapon that is wooed by most.

I admire people like Mike and Bernie for their problem solving ideas especially the attention to detail (quality), but for most reality is producing a good looking reliable car that is fun to drive and an enjoyment to own

Saw your Cobra shell and chassis at Ians on Friday.

You will be impressed. The body is so good you could almost paint it as is.

Dont worry about the steep learning curve its all been done before and all the help you need is only a phone call or email away.

Phil's right and what a curve, I new very little about auto stuff also but was always a petrol head at heart so with all the guys here I'm sure you will love the challenge. I have a suzuki steering column & indicator cluster extra. If you want it, its yours for nix. Send me a PM if you want & I can send up no charge.
