Default fuel tank problem

Hi There,

I've emailed Peter at DRB about my problem but thought I'd post it here as I usually get a faster response.

I have an aluminium fuel tank. As per DRB specs I have made an aluminium cover plate and attached a bracket to hold the EB Falcon fuel pump.

I got some steel tubing for the fuel line in and out. I went to my local radiator man to get the tubing welded in and he tells me that steel and aluminium cant be welded together.

Originally, I was going to use aluminium tubing but the wall thickness is much greater. So if I use the same outside diameter aluminium tubiung then the inside diameter is greatly reduced (restricting fuel flow). OK so why not match the inside diameter I hear you say. When the inside diameter is the same, the outside diameter of the aluminium tubing is too large to fit into the fuel pump.

Any ideas?

I too until recently thought that aluminium and steel couldnt be welded together, until I saw it done.

I will ask the tech at work who showed me where he got the welding rods from and I will post the answer for you.

Hello Cameron, sorry it has taken so long for a reply.

The welding rods that I saw used to weld aluminium to steel are called ultrabond.

There is no website address on the paperwork I have for it but there is a contact number and address.
Contact Ray & Lucie Burge
Po box 53, Montville QLD
4560
Ph/Fax 07 5442 9259 or Mobile 0429060571

It is used in a similar way to soldering and the most important part is that you must clean area useing a stinless steel wire brush

Before you try to do the welding/bonding/brazing, have you thought of AN bulkhead fittings with O-ring seals? You can get any size you want, adapters, etc.

Cameron,

Obvious answer - why don't you run some flexible fuel hose from the cover plate to under the car or wherever and then link back into s/s fuel lines?

Or am I off the beaten track?

Sorry Cameron,

Misread your query in haste

Pretty sure my inlet and outlet lines are aluminium (no car to check - sorry)

My pump is an NC Fairlane (V8) and it fits okay.

With the EB pump is it off a 6 cylinder?

I was told by Ford that all the V8 pumps are the same and similarly the 6 cylinder one's are different.

On my old pump the plastic take off is 8.5m o/d with an internal dia of 5mm.

Does that help????
