Rob, love the american description of the chev.

And your analogy may have been the case once but now those recycled alloy thingys have engine puters, body puters and of all things....a fly by wire go pedel.....ie electrical accelerator.

But...they did realise the errors of their ways and got rid of the distributor at the back of the engine.

Spose that's progress for ya.

Default Lpg

Hi Stephen,

I don't know if you have considered LPG. I am currently rebuilding a 289 i picked up cheap. With a dual quad manifold, impco's and a big cobra filter over the top, it will hide most of the gas crap.

Still expect a good horse power output.

The authorities here say if you run LPG there is no requirement for emmissions testing at all. I can run what I like.

Later will replace the 289 with an LPG purpose built 331. Should still make 400-450HP.

Regards
Hogster

Guys I know I may be stepping where I don't know all the rules but here across the pond, people are using the Mod motors (4.6l) in Cobras as well. That would include the SOHC as well as the Mustang Cobra DOHC. So they'll fit some Cobra chassis at least. May be just me, but that's better than the dark side.

LOL Future? Who said anything about the future? I'm 45 and my little lizard brain still makes me look at stuff like that. I don't covet them or anything but they are nice to look at. How old do you have to be when you can ignore a pair of twins that nice? Heck, that's why I stole them...uh... I mean IT/the avatar, from someone elses post in the first place!

BTW, I didn't mean to distract you guys from the mod motor conversation. Sorry about that. You may continue.

Firstly, someone please slap me to wake me up from those hipnotic, mesmerizing thingies.

I'm not surprised people in the states are using the SOHC modular engines. I understand that alot of Mustang drag racers blow the SOHC rather than the DOHC due to the fact that the SOHC has variable valve timing.

I've just bought a BF Fairmont Ghia with the 5.4 SOHC with the ZF auto and the bottom end grunt is great. Same torque as a 260kw Boss, (500nm) but lower in the rev range and 230kw. Doesn't look as kool as a Boss but it drives as a traditional V8 should while being silky smooth to boot.

A SOHC 5.4 in a cobra would be an awesome combo and since it's a little bit narrower and shorter than a DOHC, it would be easier to fit. Fit a blower and look out!

Look there is no doubt the Ford engine to fit from now on (if you want a new engine) is the 4.6 3v modular V8. Heads aren't as big as a 4v so it will fit better both width and height wise, air intake is exactly where you want it (at teh front like a LS1), same power as a 4v and there are already so many 'hot up' parts for them seeing all the new Mustangs in the states have them.

I only say this (above) because I know how little room I have in my engine bay. I can't imagine fitting a 5.4 DOHC under the hood of a Cobra. I know it gets done but where does it stop. I have no room in my footwell with a 4v 4.6 let alone a 4v 5.4. My bonnet clearnace in minimial even after my oil pan was modified!

I am glad I just bought an engine when I did otherwise I would still be trying to work out what I want. I may have even been swayed to the dark side. Then again maybe not.

Totally agree Blair about bugger all room. I think some kits lend themselves better to the Ford Modular engines than others. All depends on how the footwells are set up and if you can easily cut and shut the top inside corners.

You guys may find this site interesting. Sergio is a regular poster here and has done some ground breaking work with mod motors in Cobras. The first link is the "Supercobra" section but you may want to look around at the other parts as well. Lots of pics and videos.

I had to include this direct link just because the sound kind of gives me a stiffie!
