Default GT40 Progress

Yeah, I know it's not a Cobra, but it's all I have at the moment.

Here are the first pics of the paint job.

Subaru WR Blue Perl
Subaru Artic White Perl (what they call a 3 layer paint - white base, perl/mica, clear)

I could only afford the rear clip. But you've got to start somewhere.

Front clip has also been finished and looks fantastic. I just forgot to take a camera with me.

Won't have any more progress until end of next week as the painter is going away for an extra long weekend. But I knew about that. And it's actually more advanced than it was supposed to be.

Finally got some more pictures of the body work.

All I can say is WOW!!! It is absolutey stunning. I am very, very pleased with the paint work. You would think I was building a show car.

Spent all day today with the body guy, removing panels, masking up and stone guarding under sides. Then they will get a hit of gloss black. Back for another full day of work tomorrow, which should nearly finish it off. Except for black inside brake duct & napa duct holes, will it never finish.

Should be back in my garage early next week. Which is a huge achievement considering how long it's been away...don't even ask. Can't believe how many hundreds of hours I put into the body myself and I paid someone to do most of the work.

I thought I had a good photo of the perl in the stripes, but camera didn't capture it. Stripes are white base with 3 coats of perl/mica so that they match and blend with the main colour.

Oh and did I mention that it has not had it's final cut & polish. Painter will be back next week to finish it off, just in case we get overspray on it.

I apologize in advance for those with slower connections. I've included the smaller versions, there are even larger versions available in my gallery.

Thanks Les.

I tried very hard not to get Cobra stuff in the background. Didn't want to distract from the photos.

There are bodies, hard tops, even Cobra car trailers.

That particular hard top is for our very own President. Don't know why you would both, just get a Daytona and be done with it.

Lookin sweet Craig.

Everytime I see a really good Cobra or GT40 in blue I question why I want to go for something different!

Thanks guys for the compliments.

Beejay, blue goes very well with lots of chrome, it's a cooler colour. Plenty of chrome on a Cobra. Not really much chrome on a GT40, well not usually.

I actually wanted to paint it a different colour, but just couldn't find something I really liked, so went back to old blue again.

Blue is Subaru WR Blue Perl. To be honest there are about half a dozen blues that are very similiar - Mazda winning blue, Ford Shockwave, Holden Impulse Blue and even Viper blue are so close it's hard to tell them apart.

Interesting how they get the really deep(aggressive) perl effect in factory paints these days. The paint does not cover well, doesn't have much body, you need to apply a heap of layers of base colour to get coverage. It's all those layers that give the colour depth.

I thought about a candy, like House of Kolor. But just not practical for a street car, plus I'm pleased I didn't have to shell out the extra cash for paint. Heard there are some very nice candys etc from Debeer, but without the big price tag.

I went with semi-smooth stripes. Most cost effective way of getting smooth stripes, they are not perfectly smooth, but just a nice very slight bump. The stripe edges are rubbed back before clear is applied.

If anyone wants inspiration for paint colours, check out current Suzuki Swift colours. Some very impressive colours in that range. If I hadn't already committed to this blue, I would have seriously considered one of them.

Craig,

well done on the man hours spent on body sure has paid off as it looks magnificent.

Stripes look great also and very semetrical, I believe they are a real ***** to setup on the GT40.

Will we see it at the Shelby fest or nationals in 2007?

Actually getting the stripes on, seemed like the easy bit. The "Ford GT" writing on the sills is actually all painted on as well, most cars use stickers for writing.

GT40 is a real pain for body work/paint, significantly more work than a Cobra. And considerably more expensive. And that's without all the body mods I performed - Gulf Guards, deeper nostrils, functioning brake ducts, functioning napa ducts and a few surprises.

I actually wanted it ready for 2006 Nationals, I'm just hoping to have it home before I leave for Nationals now.
