Default Lexus V-8

As it looks right now, I might actually get to import a kit to Indonesia, fingers crossed. This week I was at a 4 x 4 workshop and the guy shows me a Lexus Gen 1 V-8 with an autobox attached and all the wiring. It is bog stock standard and I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction for some parts to warm it up a bit if I decide to get this for the Cob. Alternatively, maybe a few of you have gone a similar route and pass on some pointers to me on the do's and don'ts of using the Lexus V-8. I saw the photos of the RedBack spyder motor and it sure looked great but don't think the stacks would fit under the bonnet. Any help would be appreciated. NaySayers...thanks but no thanks. choices are limited here and imports are expsensive.

There are a few of us on the forum using the Lexus V8. Each motor has different modifications done to it. They perform really well considering the small capacity. Go to the following link and register. There are pages and pages of info regarding different performance hop up bits.

Built a Lexus(Toyota 1UZ-FE) powered Cobra with my brother. Locally where I live we have quite a number of Lexus powered Cobra's on the streets, both normally aspirated and turbo charged(single or twin).

Beautiful engine, very smooth, very strong, very light and very reliable. The one we fitted had 130,000km's on it and has now done a huge amount of k's on the track and various sprint & drag race meets, no problems at all.

It is a very wide engine, width is a problem for all modern overhead cam/multi-valve V8's. But with exhausts exiting angled downwards and plugs in the top of the heads, there is nothing on the sides of engine(heads are widest part) that you need access to...so can be a more practical fit then big block Ford for instance.

Normally aspirated it produced around 230rwhp. It has now had a turbo fitted and produces around 330rwhp at modest 7 pounds of boost.

One of the great things about Lexus engines is that you don't have to decompress them to super/turbo charge them. They are very efficient, so you end up with a strong response off boast and of course even stronger under boost.

A guy here recently just fitted new cames & throttle body injection. Puts out around 300rwhp. Looks very trick with the throttle bodies.

Lexus engines are not for the traditionalists, but definitely the best bang for buck out there.

Thanks Craig, I'm definitely not a traditionalist with my inline Cob. It sounds like just what I need. Any place to get a manifold and a carbie to run on it or better to leave it standard for now? I don't need high horsepower, no track days, just cruising with the wife or kids. Did you do photos of the build, particularly the motor mounts, headers (bought or fabbed at home) and what it looks like underneath. I will be running under the car exhaust as I've got little kids and a heap of animals, we go to the doctor's and the vet's enough already. Thanks for the info. Ken

Also Lexus engines have a great exhaust note...which I find really weird, little modern 4lt engine, that sounds BIG. One of the cars that was up here with Lexus, twin turbo's and side exhausts sounded exactly the same as a big block when under load. Was glorious to here it on the track.

Don't expect to have a tough idle though, they drop back to silky smooth and quiet idle even with noisy side pipes...unless you do the cams of course.

Was on the lextreme site today and there were photos of some new headers made by S&S. Wonder if they would make a slight twist in the outlet to use them with Cobra side pipes?
