The price of glory
I agree with Mat, if you have side pipes you need to take resposibility for them.
I will always stay next to my car when I park untill the pipes cool off. I have them ceramic coated on the inside and they cool off pretty quick.
You do tend to do it only once as it bucken really hurts and you are left with a nasty wound.

hot side pipes
I have working side pipes that would be instant no skin if touched and I fitted them with heat shields after a little girl burnt her leg on one pipe at a kids with cancer charity day
heat shields:-

I have since redesigned the side pipes and done away with the heat shields as they are no longer necessary
Now you can put your hand on my pipes and you just pull your hand away saying jees thats hot but no blisters or skin loss.
this is how the pipes are constructed now as there is a quarter inch air gap between the inner and outer pipes.

Baz,
I put heat shields on to protect my kids before it happened, plus mine look
sh!t hot. Don't want the risk, run a under car system or fakes. As for performance they may rob power but what are you building,
a sometimes race car or a street car. Shelby's Cobras seemed to do allright with sidepipes. To each their own and buy Uncle Les some ear plugs if you take him for a drive
Cheers

When I got married my first wife told me if I didn't use it, I'd loose it.

BAZ, Sounds like you have the same problem that everyone has...Hot Hot pipes...be careful!
First, Jet Hot ceramic coating does make them a bit cooler, but you'll still get burnt, at least a good 3rd. degree burn for instantly touching the pipes...usuallly a one time occurence.
Here's what I did: 1) provide on-going reminders to passengers until they learn the ropes. 2) Instrucctions: Don't lean on the windshield. Don't lean on the doors. and Don't touch the side pipes.
In addition, I purchased a couple of those "welding blankets" 18"x 18" at a local welding supply. The blankets are used for protecting tables and other objects close to a welding procedure from sparks and hot metal dripping onto the object underneath it. My wife attached a couple of small straps and snaps onto each blanket, the blankets were then attached to the interior door threshold on each sie of the car.
To use the blankets, the passenger or driver simply rolls them out of the cockpit and over the side pipes. Your legs are now protected from any burn while exiting the car. The entire thing cost about $10.00 and a little work.
Anyway, have fun and best of luck, Bill

Yes Mike,
My ears are still ringing from last years Shelby Fest. I like it a lot......
I'm going to HPC coat and heat shield with water/laser cut "Cobra" shields like Bretts car. Looks great, sounds great.

Brett's heat shields look good. The cobra lettering is practical as well since it lets the air circulate through there.
I'm building some socially concious side pipes that will be ready for the Nationals.
Cheers

Side pipes on both sides are legal in WA if you pay a $52.00 exemption fee, but they must have heatshields for the vehicle to be licensed. Mine are perforated stainless and I am very happy with the look, they still get warm but do not burn you.

Ross,
While I am not a fan of heat shields in general, I really like the look of yours. They are probably the best looking heat shields that I have seen on a Cobra. Very neat. How are they attached to the side pipes?

Hi Baz,
My sidepipes were made by RMC, the heatshields are held on by 6 screws that go into nuts that have been welded onto the exhaust pipe. They are easy to remove if your want to clean or polish the pipe underneath. You can see the 6 round head cap screws in the photo.

The fact is ...people WILL burn themself ...how bad...well that remains to be seen ..I had my car 2 years and my niece burnt herself good! all my friends have burnt themselves to some extent. The fact is I am now VERY aware of it and its just a habit now to say "watch the pipes" before everyone gets out ....at least 5 times. Also stand beside mny car for 10 min when I get out at a show or place such as that.
You want to see what can happen look at my gallery

Baz,
Most cobras with side pipes that I have seen have fake pipes.
Nothing wrong with fake pipes and they are much safer.
