Hi guys does anyone know of a replacement aluminium front caliper that will fit a jag front end, that will fit under a 15' wheel.
Thanks

Wilwood...........

Wilwood Dynalite #120-4993 will fit Jag series I with a simple adapter. All bolt on items....
I just made the conversion myself. The adapter can be sourced via Mickmate on this site.

Give the Guys at American Tires at Wetherill Park a call for the Wilwood calipers.

Hi Paul,

The only problem with the Wilwoods is they have no dust seals so they won't be ADR legal. Plenty of people have used them on the street down here but as long as you know.

An alternative caliper that will meet the ADR spec can be supplied by Hi-Spec in the UK. These are the ones I bought. They make calipers with radius for huge discs as well as smaller ones. Hi Spec Motorsport

Check out the Monster 4 radial mount 300mm this is designed for a 300mm disk which is close enough to the 285mm jag disc that the radius will be right. They come in different widths and you will need the 28mm versions to fit the Jag discs. Probably a bit more expensive than a Wilwood but cheaper than an AP.

The Monster 4 radial mount is what I'm putting on the rear. They are a very nice piece of hardware. All their calipers are machined from billet rather than castings. They also hard anodise the caliper bores and the pistons for wear resistance.

I went over kill on the front and bought the largest calipers they make. The Mega Monster 6 (I know the names are pretty lame).

These are the Monster 4 330mm version

You can see the dust seals in this pic

Thanks Mike , they look like they would do the job.
Will they fit under a 15 inch wheel.
And do I need to make up adaptors ?

Aussie Mike 03-10-2008 02:24 AM

They should fit inside 15" wheels. I beleive that was their intention when they designed the 300mm rotor version.

They are radial mount so you will need to make adaptors but they are dead easy to make (easier than adapting lug mount). I'll be posting some pics of my home made adaptors soon.

Thanks Mike how much did you pay for freight and import taxes ?

Aussie Mike 03-10-2008 05:15 AM

I bought them direct from the factory when I was in the UK last year.

If you get a pair shipped UPS I reckon you are up for about 130 pounds shipping according to the UPS site. Speak to Hi Spec and they might have a cheaper option. They are 217 UK pounds each for the calipers so you would be up for about $1300 all up for the pair with shipping providing you dont get hit for duty or GST at this end.

Hi Spec have an Australian agent but I can't remember the name. Might be worth giving them a call.

Cheers

Paul - if you look at the wilwoods, just check that part number. #120-4993 is for a pretty skinny disk. #120-4094 may be the one you need. Ive been thinking the same post rego as a basic upgrade.

It seams to be a problem having 15' wheels.
I'm in contact with Race Brakes at Eastern Creek and also AP Racing in the UK for a bolt on kit.
Fingers crossed I can get something oversized to fit .

Paul, while you are changing calipers, also try to dial up the correct caliper piston sizing to keep the correct front to rear brake bias. I'm currently changing calipers to correct my brake bias. Doesn't help you as I have larger aftermarket rotors on my Jag front end, so my caliper choices won't be applicable.

Wilwoods are particularly good in this regard as you get a good choice of piston sizes.

Aussie Mike 03-10-2008 11:37 PM

Not a real problem on the CR. We have seperate master cylinders front and rear and a balance bar on the pedal. Brake bias can be dialed in with the choice of M/C size and fine tuned with the balance bar.

I'm thinking I'll have to switch the 3/4" front M/C to the rear brakes and fit a new 1" M/C for the front.

Thanks Mike, yeah I'm a dill.

For some reason I thought Paul had an RMC, must have RMC on the brain today. If I had glanced over at his profile I would have seen that he has an CR and it all gets a lot easier.

I hope this question isn't too stoopid but;

Wouldn't it be easier to buy something like an adjustable proportioning valve - and quite a bit cheaper?

(glad this topic came up because I'm currently considering this..)

LB, why are you considering changing your brakes?.

What do you think is wrong or needs improvement?.

cheers

400TT 03-11-2008 12:40 AM

Yeah, it would be. But I should elaborate and tell the whole story.

Considering I have those archaic 4 piston jag calipers, poor brake bias & also want to narrow the track a little.

I can get some modern calipers that will substantially reduce unsprung weight, correct my brake bias and make it easier to narrow the track.

So by changing calipers I get it all and dial in my brake bias close enough I don't need to muck with the rest of the system.

LoBelly 03-11-2008 01:00 AM

thanks for that - and I apologise for the hi-jack

I'm not considering changing my brakes at the moment but am considering an adjustable proportioning valve.

I too have those archaic 4 pot jag brakes at the front.
During the build we rebuilt them and they're the most powerful things I've ever had on any of my (admitted, limited selection of) cars. When testing them (the archaic brakes) out my brother actually gave me a head-rush by slamming on the brakes and stopping suddenly - even though this might be a reflection of the poor state of my circulatroy system rather than an endorsement of the brakes - they're currently good enough for me.

However, at the track I feel that the front is doing all the work, making the car squirm (?) under heavy braking, so am considering a proportioning valve to try to dial the brakes in a bit better.

So from my perspective the proportioning valve will save me having to muck around with the rest of the system. ;)
