Default Hello From Another Green Newbie

G'day guys,

Just wanted to drop a quick line and introduce myself. I'm a young Sydney bloke (up in Turramurra) who's starting to play with the idea of building a Cobra. I guess I'm 12-24months from making a start on this project (pending on time and $$s, of course). I'm assuming I'll be up for $100K to make one of these beasts.

I've got very limited mechanical knowledge/skills, but I look forward to finding a place that will let me get hands on with the build. I figure if your going to have a kit car you should know how to pull it apart and put it back together...

I currently have an stock Focus XR5. Hell it's no Cobra, but it's fun all the same

I look forward to clocking up some quality time trolling this forum and meeting you blokes and your better halves at some stage in the future.

Cheers,
Andrew

Welcome Andrew, you've certainly come to the right place for advise etc.

Definotely catch up with the NSW gang, definotely getting along to the local Cobra Club meetings if you can - http://www.cobracarclubnsw.org.au/ Cobra ownership is definitely not a requirement and it's very handy to join before you buy the Cobra.

And if you haven't been before, make sure you get along to the Cobra Nationals at Wakefield Park in October.

$100k is a pretty good budget, you can certainly buy/get built a new turnkey Cobra for that money.

Personally I wouldn't be concerned about your skill level, I would aim to build the car yourself, you will pick up the required knowledge pretty quickly if you do your research and put the effort in. Plus you can always outsource any work you are not comfortable with to the experts or get expert advice.

Hell nothing wrong with Focus XR5. Very nice little unit actually.

Welcome Andrew

Definately get in contact with the NSW club. There is a wealth of info for the prospective builder or buyer.
There is a couple of us who live in the Hornsby area and I for one are only too willing to talk all day about Cobra's.

Welcome along Andrew, I suggest you take up the offer of seeing some cars and talking to as many people as you can about there cars and builds.

There really is alot that most people can do on these cars when building, there are also some parts that are best left to the pro's if your not sure.

I would have thought that for 100k you should be able to get into a Cobra very easily, and it should have a fairly high level of spec and finish.

Come along to the Nationals, see all the cars side by side and work out what you like/dislike (there are huge differences in shape) But to 99% of the population they all look the same. Like a Cobra.

You are welcome to come and have a look at my car if you want some advice.

I am about 90% there, in the Hills area.

I was in the same position 3 years ago looking at building, found it a lot easier to buy a car already built and then start playing with my own mods. Saves the frustration of waiting, and still having the pleasure of personal input into your car...... not forgetting you can drive it from day one!! I live at Marsfield now and if you want to talk or visit drop me a line.

Welcome to the Forum. You've made a good start by joining up here and getting involved with the NSW club is a good idea too. That way you will make less expensive mistakes in whatever you decide on (Build or Buy).

Get along to a few events. One thing you will find is that Cobra folks are very aproachable and will be more than happy to talk your ears off about their cars. It's very easy to be passionate about these cars.

The researching stage of the Cobra project is a lot of fun. You will learn a lot and make a bunch of new friends. I've met more new friends out of this Cobra hobby than any other activity I've done.

Cheers

Thanks for the big welcome guys and your initial advice. I'll definitely sign up to the NSW cobra car club....
Beejay and dadndave thanks for the offer. I'll drop you guys a pm and try 'n hook up.

I would love to build a cobra. From what I've read Niel Streeting sounds like the go. Someone with all the knowhow and a workshop.

I've also got access to a bloke who's a machinist and a couple of guys who can do incredible welding jobs. So I don't think building should be too impossible, even with my nonexistent mechanical knowledge.

ps what's the Chev conflict all about?
