ADR 15 - Demisting of Windscreen
 
Does anyone know what the current ADR ruling is for fitting demisters into Cobras. If you look up the Third Edition Australian Design Rules it says

"ADR 15 - Demisting of Windscreen

The function of this Australian Design Rule is to specify requirements for standards for equipment to maintain the windscreen clear of 'Mist' so that driver's 'Forward' vision is not obscured.

/00 /01 - This standard ceased to have effect for new vehicles as from 9 December 2003."

In an open car such as the Cobra does this mean a demister dosn't have to be fitted especially the last part "/00 /01 - This standard ceased to have effect for new vehicles as from 9 December 2003"

If it does need a demister what rule is it and what does it say.

This says to me that regardless of whether you have a roof, the rule no longer applies to new vehicles.

Mr President,


The Vic engineer wanted to know the flow rate of the A/C unit (cfm).

Vintage air had no idea of the flow rates nor did it state it anywhere on their local or O/S brochures.

The Vic engineer stated their was a test similar to the wiper sweep test. Not something you would want to do.....:confused::confused:

When I took my car to the engineer I was advised that the demisters were not required for open (roadster) cars - but were for enclosed/sedans/coupes/hardtops etc - so the configuration of the car changed the requirements.

For what its worth, when I registered mine in VIC earlier this year the engineer said as long as I didnt have a roof (when I registered it) it was considered a roadster and didnt need demister. But I assume each state still varies in their interpretation.

When I get around to putting on a soft top I will put one in as I'd reckon the soft top will be used when its raining which is when I'd need a demister.

When I registered my Harrision the transport inspector checked if the demister works. My new car will have a heater/demister.

I was curious to what the the rule was, if any, after reading ADR 15 and hearing that Victoria dosn't require one if there is no roof fitted.

It does make sense for a few to not to have one I guess. But why not have one anyway as if the car is used a lot we often fit a hood and then it is needed in my experience.

Which heater are you guys fitting to Harrisons? Vintage Air doesn't appear to make one small enough and the last contact I had on eBay has disappeared.

has anyone thought about a heated front screen? Wonder if it would be an effective option? they use them in ther V8's !

I can personally vouch for Jeremy at Speedy Air Spares as he is a Bundaberg local. I got my unit there and in the Harrison, the unit fits nicely on the rails behind the dash.

Jeremy is an Auto electrician by trade and unfortunately a few years ago had a diving accident in the water and is in a wheelchair and then started up the internet business.

Thanks guys. Mick, does that singler blower unit do the job? I'm also considering some outlets for the foot wells.

The twin blower is a bit bigger - 260 x 270 x 115 versus 200 x 210 x 125mm.

I might have to open a beer and go out to the shed with the tape measure!

That Speedy unit looks like a nice unit.

In the Harrison I used a 3 inch marine bilge blower.

HA ! guess what I was doing today...Brand new edelbrock water pump and not a cracker of water flow through the heater outlets. Bought some clear hose to watch for the flow. Opened the end of the return line to the pump and still no flow. I eventually got a flow by directing the pump outlet flow into a bucket (used another hose) whilst pouring water into the disconnected line. What a bloody mess. Green water everywhere. By the time I got the hose connected again I had another air lock. One down side of doing it alone. So...I machined up a bleeder fitting. Tomorrow I will fit it and see what happens. I reckon I'll be able to remove the bleeder once I've got a completely full circuit.
What was catching me out was the way the pump acted. Nothing happened for about 60 seconds or more, then away it went. So if you disconnected the return hose off the pump and put your thumb over that pump fitting whilst leaving the return hose end open. It'll probably start to flow.(engine running) I can't do that because I can't get to the fitting easily. Good luck.
