Steve,
The reason for X-crossing the straps in the back is to keep the car from shifting side-to-side. We do the same thing when tying up large boats in a slip. They're called "spring lines."
I use the control arms in front. I figure if they can handle being punished on the road (imagine the force on 'em when you toss it into a high-speed curve), they can handle being strapped down in a trailer.
