Trunk lid lift kit.

Another Backdraft owner sent me this info. A gentleman designed and is manufacturing this kit that allows the trunk lid to open fully and utilizes a piston that makes it possible to open and stay in any position. I ordered one today. Here is his Facebook video explaining it. I have his email address if anyone is interested.

Looks cool, but I would be very concerned about the pressure exerted on the trunk strut mount, when closed. It just looks like it would stress that area....

I am guessing you are referring to the bottom mount. It would all depend on the pressure the shock exerts. When the trunk lid is in the vertical position, the only pressure exerted would be gravity but in the closed position and the shock compressed, the force would be shear force against the sides of the mount and mounting bolts and not pushing or normal force directly down but across attachment.

Think this would be a great addition to my BDR. The question raised on "stress" now concerns me. With the new hinges being designed for this application, does the possible stress issue become a moot point? FredG, can you share the designers email address?

Yes im talking about downward force when closing. That is not an area you want to stress fracture. I can see mine flex strictly from the weight of the trunk when open. I cant imagine the downward force on closing be good for that area. It would in my opinion need to be a very weak strut to overcome this. All struts ive seen require a good amount of compression to begin the collapse of the piston.
It may be fine, but to me it would add stress on an already poor design.

Here is what I received back when I inquired about the piston force.

The answer to the question is 20 lbs of force. When I got the gas shock I thought it was too much for the hinge, but it is perfect. The hinge on the trunk is very solid because you are using 2 bolts to hold it in place and the trunk is reinforced from the factory at that exact location. That is why I chose to use the stock mounting location. In addition, I didn’t want to drill additional holes in the car. I actually had a custom made gas shock at 10 lbs of force and it was not enough to hold it in place. The lower mount is the stock mount where we leave the bracket connected to the car but take off the special mechanical bracket and put a ball stud in it’s place. The only drilling you have to do is when you remove the mechanical bracket the hole used to mound that piece is too small for the ball stud, so it needs to be slightly bigger. This kit fits and operates perfectly. You will love it. Thank you.
