Unhappy Toploader Clearance

I have BDR #88 and I'm using a toploader with BDR's Factory Clutch slave cylinder which is off of a mazda pickup. Is anyone else having a clearance problem like mine. There's no room. Could someone recomend a different slave cylinder that will fit better???

Brad

You could use a hyd. T/O bearing setup instead. Check out Mcleod or Tilton.

Theres a ton of posts on CC about trouble with ANY of the hydro throw out bearings. If at all possible I wouldn't go near one.

A top loader with the correct gear shift so at least there is SOMETHING "real" with the car?

...makes perfect sense to me!

Welcome to the Backdraft forum these are replicas. They do not have room for a Toploader

No room for Toploader? They're smaller than a Tremec.

And as far as a hydraulic T/O goes,i've had a McLeod on my car since 1996 with no issues.

I'm with Excal....

I've seen way too many posts on defective/leaking hydraulic TOB's....you couldn't pay me to install one on my car....I'm not a big proponent of pulling the tranny once a month.

I know it's "just a replica" but come on anything you can do within reason to make it "more real" is a worthy goal. We all "draw the line" somewhere. Me? Well I draw the line at a VW engine in the trunk, all though that works for some people! After all it's "just a replica".

It is not the transmission's dimensions, 'tis the shift linkage ... quite a difference

Have any other BDR owners installed Toploaders and figured out a workaround or shortcut to make this doable without all of the Linkage clearance issues? Also, is a Toploader longer than a Tremec 600? If so, where do you make up the difference in length? Do you push the transmission forward?

Just make a relief for it. I did it on the trans tunnel of my Cobra in order to clear the Richmond Gear linkage, no big deal. A Dremel, a few hours some aluminum and fiberglass.

I made one of those post about how much trouble I was having with my Hyd T/O brg. and it has been trouble free for about 2 yrs now frequent street use and ample track use. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another McLeod T/O Brg.

Anything can be made to fit in these cars. I made my Toploader (the linkage)fit in my car by notching the frame and rewelding the notched portion with heavy steel. It dosn't mater how long or short your transmission is, you just make the driveshaft to fit. Don't move your trans./ engine. Also, there are three different lenghts of Toploaders, 25 1/2", 24" and 27". The 24" was for Cobra's, but the others could work just fine. If you already have a long trans. and if it needs to be rebuilt, it can be made into a 24" model.

If you have not installed one you should not comment about it.
If you do not use shortcuts and follow the instruction to install it properly there are no problems.
I have a McLeod and think it is great!

I have a BDR #230 with top loader and a big block 427, I did not install either my self but they did have to cut tunnel and add a bump out on driver side to let the linkage clear. I could post a picture but I don't know how yet. You may want to re think installing one, for one it doesn't look as clean on the inside although carpet covers the bump out. And if you have 373 gears as I do it would be nice to have a 5th gear ( 60 MPH @ 3000 RPM ).
