Beer and Wine in CA
Hello there,
I will be attending the Monterey Auto Week in August.
We all know that life is too short to drink bad red wine....... 
Therefore I am after some recommendations on beer, cider and Shiraz, three of my favourite things in life.
I love Carona and German wheat beer, apple cider ( Bulmers, Rekorderlig ) and a nice full body Shiraz ( up to 14% Vol ).
I would love some advice on what to try and more importantly what to stay away from....

Well stiffy, sorry to disappoint but the best Shiraz is produced in
Australia. My favorite is Torbreck Runrig.

I know it is but, when in Rome !!!!!
There must be something drinkable 
Last years Le Mans 24 hour was very dissapointing ( well actually all of France was,,, ) when it came to nice red wine anyway.

Keeping it simple and less than 10 pages...try a zinfandel from the Lodi area or a Napa cab. Several of the wine companies I represent have operations in Australia, and I represented Fosters when they had wineries here before spinning them off...and the folks I talked to today suggested that might make you feel comfortable while at the same time introducing you to some new stuff. You probably already know our syrah is not your syrah.
Beer...if you like Corona...well hell, get a Corona. A little Sierra Nevada ale can wet your whistle as well.

Guiness (a meal in itself)
At BJ's Brewery (not sure where in Monterey), Tonoka or any of their dark beers are good.
For wine, I tend to like Merlots for the fruitiness. Problem with some wines is it depends upon the harvest of a particular year. I do like a good 2007 Ferrari-Cerrano but they're now at the $40-50 range. Generally, I like Merlots that are 3 years old minimum.

Stiffy: I have sent you another private message. But in general, there are a number of Syrahs here that you should like. I'll make a number of suggestions, but I'm impressed at your 14% alky number. There are too many big alky guys out there, but I'll suggest some cooler growing regions for you to try. As for beer, I'm more of an IPA enthusiast, but I'm sure we can try a few.
