Default Ignition wires identification

Hello Don,
(think I rambled a bit with this, but here goes)
Using the Chevett steering column, what is the ignition switch lead (wire #) that goes directly to the coil, getting a clean +12 volt, bypassing the ballast resistor? The lead that supplies the full voltage for starting. After you let off from turning the key all the way for the engine to turn over and it is in the on position, then the coil gets the filtered (ballast resistor) battery.
Right now, and it has been working, at the firewall drivers side wiring harness distribution (engine compartment side), wire 162 is spliced to wire 128 (? don't know why) which goes to the positive side of ballast resistor. Wire 138, which is terminated on the negative side of the ballast resistor goes to the positive side of the coil.
Any idea what the wire number is that I'm looking for?
A friend gave me his old Crane XR700 electronic ignition unit. Yeah, it is an inexpensive unit, with an optical trigger assembly, and I'm still required to use the ballast resistor. If my battery is weak, I sometimes run into a starting problem.
As mentioned before, I'm an electronic wiring illiterate and pretty much need wiring diagrams to get by. I was told that there should be two hot leads to the + side of the coil or two leads on
the negative side of the ballast resistor. One of these second leads comes from the ignition switch with a clean +12 volts. Is this correct?
Thanks for your time and availability to answer some questions.

Wire # 128 is the ignition wire. Someone must have cut 162 which is a turn signal wire and just spliced it. If you don't use the ballast # 138 is not used. The way it's setup is #128 to the ballast "in" and #138 "out. I'm not sure how the Crane unit works. Most electronic ignition setups have 1 wire on each side of the coil. If you give me some more info on the Crane system I'm sure I can help you wire it.
