Angry Paint Job

I went to a paint shop and asked how much to paint my car,
the guy came and looked atit and called me back in 3 days to say
$10,000!!!!! I almost S*** myself. What should a paint job cost? Incidently all of the body prep is done!

When you say all the body prep is done do you mean that you have roughed up the gel coat with 80 grit paper followed with about three coats of catalyzed primer. Then about three or four coats of primer surfacer that has been hand blocked with a guide coat until all the imperfections are gone and re-primed. And now you have it in a sealer coat ready to be painted?

If so then I would think a fair price for a three stage paint job on a Cobra would be between $3000-$5000.

Clois

P.S.-I don't think the paint shop you went to really wants to paint your car. Keep shopping! Check with Roscoe (here a CC) and find out who painted his car. From the pictures I have seen they did a pretty good job.

10K? That sounds like one of those "I don't want to do it so I will quote high" estimates

A "show quality" paint job can easily run from 6-10K. A street quality job about 4-5K and a don't look to close job is 2500-4K

Alot depends on the quality of the body.

Now days 1500-2000 in materials is not out of the question.

You get what you pay for
The question is what do you want?

Art,

Email me off line and I'll hook you up with a guy who does show winning FFR's for $6,500 (with stripes)................With the majority of your work done (but not all I'll bet), I would think yours would be less than this...........

Sincerely,

Bill S.

Clois,

Roscoe's car is still in it's factory gel coat, and has yet to be painted.

$10K is ridiculous. To have all the body work done and to have my car painted cost half that. You need to shop around some more. Mine car was painted in CT, by Connecticut Custom Car and they did a great job http://conncustomcar.com

Default Walt Wosko

I second Chaplin's comments. I was back in CT earlier this summer and had a chance to talk to Walt Wosko Jr. of Connecticut Custom Cars and he took the time to explain what went into one of his paint jobs on the bodies provided to him from "Uncle Peter" at ERA (where mine will be coming from sometime in the future).
They take the body as it comes in from ERA and go through several iterations of filling, sanding, baking, refilling, resanding, baking etc before the color is shot.
A show quality paint job from them will run you in the 5-6K range depending on if you want stripes etc.
For 10K I would expect you could go the full ghost flame multi-color shading to other multicolors and then some.
Yeah, I'd shop around some more if I were you.

Found a paint shop that has done many Cobras in our area.
$3,500! This sounds about right, what do you all think?

Does $3500 include bodywork or is that just the price for paint? If that is just paint, it seems about right. If that is paint and bodywork, I'd be a little concerned (seems too cheap), but I could be wrong. The other thing I would tell you is to look at several cars that have been done by this painter before you deliver your car to them.

Bill S, Yes sir, thank you. Chaplin,He's done several and showed me pictures,as a matter of fact he had one in the shop getting ready for final paint. Looked fine to me. I've done most of the "heavy" body work but he will go over it anyhow. I'm taking car in tomorrow. I will be re-assembling all of the shiny parts and hanging the doors, trunk, and hood once I get it back home. Everything has been fitted so it will go together easy, except maybe those damn doors!!!

Baby is at the paint shop, boy the garage looks bare. The ride down on the flat bed produced many guys looking and pointing
and giving thumbs up. The same thing happened the day it was delivered. As we were unloading the kit several guys stopped and
had a million questions like where'd it come from how much did it cost etc.etc. I'm used to getting nice comments about my Vette but this thing is another story. Now it's time to scrub down the garage and get rid of all of the dust from sanding and grinding.
Man this stuff sticks to everything!!

I stopped by a local hot-rod painter and saw a $30,000 paint job today! (flames etc....) pretty impressive stuff. Damn I'm poor :-(
