Rat Damaged
This morning when I went out to my tool box I thought I saw a rat scurry under the chest.. So I went to Home depot and bought some traps. While laying them out tonight I noticed that the little bastard has abused my cobra. He ate through the passenger seat in two spots.  Well payback is a mother... My wife just threw his dead &^&&^ in the trash bin. I guess he had a thing for peanut butter... 
Now I have to figure out what to do about the seat.... Ideas? I guess I could take it to an upholstery shop but that sounds expensive....  |

Rat bastards.  A friend of mine lives in the mountains and some rats crawled up under the dash of his wife's 540 BMW and chewed up the wiring. Ended up costing $3K to fix everything. 
Hopefully they can repair your seat vs. reupholstering it.

That happened a few years ago to my buddies wife's Trailblazer. They climbed into the engine compartment and ate the wiring insulation off. $600 at Chevy. I wonder if my car insurance will pay for it...  |

My friend's insurance did cover the repair after the deductible.

Very common problem. I work at an Acura dealership. We had a customer bring a car in with a foul smell. After taking the driver's seat out we found a big smelly dead rat. Nothing new, we see stuff like this all the time.
Here's the kicker- that lady called me back and accused US of planting the rat! She wanted a new car. Luckily we documented the whole process with a digital camera. Unbelievable...

Guess the rats are right up there with cats that shred your leather seat covers in your uncovered roadster, dogs that lay under the car and chew the wires to your electronic shifted trannie so it stays in park and cats that pee all over you new woolly floor mats....then there are the pigeons and the ..........cats and dogs keep the rats out but they do plenty on their own.

Yes, it is covered, minus your comp deductible. At least with State Farm it is!

We had a woman who had Mice get ino the car and do damage. She was bent out of shape when she was told "NO" it is "NOT" covered by warranty!
The comprehensive section of your insurance should cover this.

rats made a house in my air box of my chevy silverado and ate the wires to my windshield wipers, didnt know of course until it rained !!!

Im not sure that there is enough damage for an insurance claim. I guess I will find out when I take the seat to an upholstery shop.... On the upside we caught another one last night. Must buy more traps... |

I don't know why they do but rats like to chew the insulation off electrical wiring, Coax cable, heating ducts and I guess seats. They can be quite destructive when they get under your house. They can carry desease too. Keep the traps out and yes they like peanut butter. But they are crafty...some will get the peanut butter without tripping the trap. I like to wrap the trip with thin wire that is kinda stiff to hold the bait on and that usually fools the rat. Gottcha! A cople things I have learned from the rat catching experts is that their fur is oily and they will leave a trail in areas they frequent. It looks like dirty spot on the wall or floor where they enter and exit. You can see it on siding or stucco too. Best to plug the openings with steel wool or wire mesh. If your catching big rats you can count on there being little ones around too. I hate rats, good luck.

OK, for no charge here are two tidbits of information;
#1 all rodents like to knaw/eat the insulation of all types of wiring BECAUSE the oil that the insuilation is made from is the same oil as Peanut Butter! Yes they will "die" for peanut butter!
#2 and the best hint is "Mothballs". Rodents of all types can not tolerate the smell. When we stored boats for the winter mice/rats etc., could and did thousands of dollars worth of damage to the wiring and the interiors. After "X" number of complaints an insurance agent told me to scatter a few Moth Balls in anything we stored. Problem immediately solved and have never had that problem again been nigh onto 15 years now....Catch them with peanut butter- make 'em run with Moth Balls!

I am going to have to try that.. MY wife told me that a few weeks ago as well but i had read somewhere that it is only a short term solution.. But you are speaking from experience that it works, so its worth the shot. I should go check my traps and see if I caught any more.. |

Moth Balls work great. They also work on Cats. Had a Male Cat spraying the basement windows (down in the window well) . Some Moth Balls scattered around on the ground in front of all the windows down in the wells solved the problem.
