Default I'm gonna build one

Hi all. New here as you might gather. Was turned on to the site by a fellow SC owner. I've been talking with him about building my own and he suggested you guys here first and foremost.

I dont own one yet, but thats the plan. My girlfriend hit me up the other night saying..i want to build a car, and not just any car..a Cobra SC...so here we are. Gotta love a woman like that.

So i've been looking at all the options out there wrt diff kits, etc.

So send me some of your grand knowledge..and understanding everyone has their preference. Just gaging diff opinions. Yet we're not going to jump into it for another year...

Giving all the options out there...which is the better kit to build...thanks and great to be here....lots to read up on for sure...

i currently own an 07 Shelby GT500...i like to go fast...

I'm also sure you'll get lots of good advice.....but until then I'll give you something to think about.
1) How do you plan to use the car (show? race? pleasure driving?)?
2) What is your budget?
3) What is your mechanical experience/aptitude?
4) How important is "originality" to you?

Since you live in Va. Bch. can I assume you've been to Jenro's on Saturday night? If not that's a good place to see Cobras (weather permitting). Also, the Kitcar/Replicar show at Carlisle, Pa. is well worth the six hour trip if you want to see a bunch of Cobras.

What is best for you vs what your budget is will be the key. At the very least, a car with rear coil overs, 3 link or IRS rear suspension as well. Big block or small block, or this kit vs that kit comes in to play as well. Do not allow one or two people to sway you, go out and find a group of local Cobra owners and compare their cars side by side. Work up your budget (add 20% on to your highest figure to play it safe), then go from there. Also, do not be afraid to ask questions if there is something that you do not understand, that is one of the reasons why places like this exist. Most of all, enjoy the research and the hunt.

Depending on your priorities you might also consider buying and then focus on updating/modifying the car you buy to fit your needs/tastes. It will take you a year or more to build and you could be driving in a few months if you buy. Your budget will also go further. Anyway, just something to consider.

Thanks for all the well wishes guys. And comments made. Much appreciated. Thanks for the recommendation of site Tony...good to see you here.

So to try and answer some of those questions...

1. Budget...not an issue...it'll by a labor of love in time..i know the cost assoc with, and thats why we're waiting a year..plus gives me ample time to research and learn from you all.
2. Use..just for pleasure..
3. Originality...as much as practical...not dead set on 98% to the master. Its just something to do and have to enjoy.
4. Mechanical Skills...i'm an mech engineer retired from Navy after 30 years. I work on all my cars.
5. I'm leaning towards....IRS, 427 block. I like FFR's setup. Kirkham's is nice also.

Basically this is my girlfriends idea (great woman) and she along with me wants to build it, not have it 95% done and just throw in eng/tranny. Its something she wants us to do together..and i'm all for it. FFR is very appealing in that regard.

6. Yes, i frequent Jenro's often, probably seen each other there and didnt know it. My shelby is white/vista blue stripes. I have the Proglass hood.

I look forward to reading and learning...and trust me, i will ask questions in the appropriate area..

You sound alot like me when I started. I wanted to build, rather than buy. I wanted a high degree of accuracy - not one of those "loosley based on a cobra" types. And I wasn't looking to get into it on the cheap.

If you're looking for a build together, I'd suggest Hurricane too. (not just because I own one either) Money no object would have to be Kirkham and less-money than that I'd suggest ERA. The Kirkham is not really going to be a build like you want though. I'm not sure how ERA sells their car, kit or assembled but Bill S. above could tell you.

thanks for the info...we have been looking at the Hurricanes as well. Nice setup.

Anyone have input (i know you do) on engines. Looking for a 427 system to put in her.

Good luck, the more you look at them, the more you will know and the more questions you will ask. At some point you must just pull the trigger. The important thing is to AIM first, then fire away.

I bought mine used and have been changing it to my taste. This has saved me a lot of $$$$.

I have had quite a few of these cars as have many others on the forum. It is hard to get into the differences between the cars here without opening a huge can of worms. If I can help answer some questions give me a call 618 322 6046. There are definite differences between kits and manufacturers.
