Default Ross ERA 427 SC build

Guys,

With the help of some of the guys on the board here, I have started the process in terms of getting my ERA 427SC build going. I sent my deposit in this pas Feb, ironed out the car build with Peter (just did some tweaking with him tonight) and the drivetrain will be coming from Lykins Motorsports. So this is the official start of my build log, yes it will be slow to update in the beginning based on the wait time but hope to get things really rolling in sometime 2019. I will post thoughts in the mean time while I acquire things, changes things, etc.... The plan it to make it very similar to a 427SC with the look. So under the hood it will look old school and simple.

The car from ERA, here is my list of goodies (yes it is long, you only live once):

427 Basic Kit
Bond body and mount floors to chassis
Side pipes, Ceramic coated black
Primary pipes, set of 8, with gaskets
Ceramic coating for primary pipes
Fan, additional, use with standard or HD fan
Fan, radiator, heavy duty
Luca Tripode headlights, pair
Hood handles, "T" style, lockable, pair
Oil cooler assembly, 6"
Sand blasting, powder coating and coating of chassis, suspension, hinges, pedals, etc
Install roll bar kit
Powder coat roll bar
"AC" pedal faces
Trunk mounted rear battery compartment, with close-off panels
427 SC standard dashboard
Add for leather covered dashboard
Wiper / dash lights
Original-style turn indicator lights (pair)

Windshield washers, mechanical pump with cowl fittings and reservoir

Adjusting bracket, alternator, ceramic coated
Battery cables, rear battery (ground, starter sol., starter)

Brakes, front racing, with Wilwood caliper and 12" rotor, mounted on modified steering knuckle, S.S. hoses
Optional 3 can system

Rack and pinion steering gear, new. Modified by ERA Complete with inner tie rods, bushing and bolts
Quick release hub for steering column
Rear suspension, with outboard brakes, double adjustable dampers (3.31)
Anti-sway bar, front
Anti-sway bar, ERA rear
Transmission mount, TREMEC
Shift handle, Tremec without knob
Voltage regulator, with special cover
Pin drive wheels (6 pin) (trigo), hubs, front bearings, seals, 11" rotors and all hardware
Windshield wiper arms and blades, stainless steel
Windshield wiper assembly
5 Speed shift knob
Wheel House vents (Pair)
Trunk carpet kit for hide away battery

The tires will be Avons:

The motor and trans will be done by Brent Lykins. We will be putting in a 427 side oiler and here is what how it will be built out:

BBM cast iron 427 SO FE block

Factory 390 or 427 cast crankshaft, 3.780" stroke
Custom Lykins Motorsports hydraulic roller camshaft
New camshaft thrust plate

Factory timing cover reconditioned
Factory timing pointer reconditioned
New steel balancer spacer
Powerbond harmonic balancer
Scat H-beam connecting rods
Federal Mogul rod bearings
Custom Racetec forged pistons
Hastings moly faced metric ring pack
Rotating assembly internally balanced
Morel hydraulic roller lifters
Felpro cylinder head gaskets
ARP head bolts
Factory C5AE-F medium riser cylinder heads
Cylinder heads professionally ported to increase flow by about 40 cfm

New factory style non-adjustable rocker arms

Factory distributor converted to Pertronix electronic ignition, fitted with steel distributor gear
New cap/rotor
Custom Trend pushrods

Holley 750 mechanical secondary carburetor
Mr. Gasket intake manifold gasket

Felpro oil pan gasket
Melling oil pump/shaft

These are my thoughts for now, the items I have ordered, etc..... sure there will be changes but isn't that half the fun! Any comments are welcome since most of you have already gone down this road. It should be a fun project that will take all my blood, sweat and tears (and money) in the coming year. Once I know my build number, I will update everyone.

Thanks.... been spending a lot of time looking at photos and getting input from fellow members. I want a close to rolling chassis since I don’t have that much free time but do have the space and tools to do the finish work. My paint will be done locally here to me in PA.

Over the years, I think ERA has fixed just about everything that I've found to complain about. There are two things, though, that you may want to consider for your build. 1) If you have Bob make you a custom, removable, Turkey Pan, your life will be much, much easier as you deal with your Holley year after year after year; and 2) Servicing (primarily lubricating) the front driveshaft u-joint with the ERA outboard braked rear (fitted with the emergency brake) is tricky. In fact, at first you will think it to be impossible. Old Jaguars had a removable panel on the tunnel area adjacent to the front u-joint for servicing. That would be a nice, and simple, tweak. The Jags also had a little plug on their rear uprights to allow for a squirt of grease in on the rear hubs. ERA casts their own uprights, and I've often wondered why they didn't include the little plug that Jag did. Bob will probably say "because it's not needed." But that would be really easy to add as well.

And I take it that "Fan, additional, use with standard or HD fan" is what we colloquially refer to as "Pusher Fans." If so, ERA's standard method of wiring your HD puller fan and your dual pusher fans is to all come on at that same time, wham, when the thermostatic switch in the bottom radiator hose grounds on. That momentary influx of current will take its toll on your Smiths ammeter gauge, plus, you don't need all three anyway. Instead, have them wire it up this way: Cool Modification - For Pusher Fans Only, Though It's a far superior design, if I do say so myself.

Congrats! I didn't see a heater on your list. I live in California and I'm glad to have it. I suspect you'd get a lot of use out of it in PA.

I had a heater on the list but took it off. I don’t have time to drive my other cars and figure this will be a sunny day cruiser so I passed.

I can't say I use mine all that much either. But, they do also act as "defrosters," which are required in some states, fwiw.

No chassis number yet, my deposit wast sent to ERA in early October so hopefully I will be getting the number fairly soon. I'm still gathering parts, but haven't started rebuilding the engine or differential yet.
