 When I was with the airlines my two favorite cities, (in Europe) were Rome, for the history and Munich for the beer. Most Americans may go to Euorpe once in a lifetime. I was there 3 times a month for 9 years. You soon learn to shun the large "tourists" spots and resturants for the "Mom & Pop" joints.
They get to know you and treat you like family! Of all the countrys in Euorpe, Italy is probably more third world than the rest. I have to admit that one night we were cruising home from "Mike's Bar" in Rome and were accosted by a group of Gypsy kids. Although I had my hands in my pockets, the little buggers managed to relieve me of about $80 bucks in Lira.( Had to admire their technique). Live & learn, from then on I kept my money in a money belt. Still did not dampen my enthusiasm or love for "the old countrys" and I cherish my memories of Euorpe to this day!
