Hey Doug, how's the getting-back-to-par process coming along?

I'm a newbie inspired by your story and by the Club Cobra members who've stepped up to lend an assist. Hope all's going better by you, and that your build is giving you some happy distraction.

Default A Past Due Up date on 767Jockey's Cobra

I had another long and rather disturbing phone call from Doug this afternoon. As if this guy doesn’t have enough problems, his Cobra wont be finished until early Spring of 2012. (For your information Doug has run into another snag in his recovery, he will be spending the next few (?) weeks in the hospital due to some complications from the radiation treatments.)

Apparently I have waited far to long to post something about “767Jockey’s” car.
For those that don’t know, I DO have the car, hundreds of donated parts to Dougs car, still in their original shipping boxes. His car has sat in my garage covered up since it arrived here. There are two reasons for this; Doug is still trying to get very expensive parts for his motor, transmission, E-brake etc.

His car IS painted and approximately 1/3rd assembled. With Doug’s understanding, knowing I am now working alone, his car has to come after I finish the Paying Customers cars that were in front of his. He understands completely. [edit]

I’m sure IF Doug would have spent his donated funds foolishly or haphazardly I would have most of the parts to actually get started to head for the finish line!

For THOSE that do NOT know, Doug does not have control of the donated monies! His wish right from the beginning was that a Third party take control of the funds so NO ONE would assume any improprieties on either the donated parts or the monies.

[edit]

If ANYONE has questions about Doug’s Cobra, other than personal ones, please feel free to write me: DV4477@Gmail.com, Ed Combs-4905 Wayne Rd., Pentwater, Mi. 49449, or simply call me-7 days a week @ 231-869-4608.

!
thanks for the update, I have been following the original tread with great anticipation
Is it possible to get a list of what parts are still needed? Perhaps with the help of the forum members it would be possible to locate necessary items quicker? Last I read there was a search for Edelbrock heads, there are almost always a couple of sets on Epay. Probably also need a set of Erson rocker arms, better valve springs etc
Is there need for more donations? If so it should be posted. Even in this pathetic crappy economy, it should be possible to get enough funds to finally finish Dougs car
hang in there Doug

Post pictures along with the list of parts you still need. I would love to see the cars progress.

I have spoken to Doug and offered to send him a set of cast iron 390 heads for him to use. I have approx 10 sets of heads and I'll look to see which heads are the best in terms of performance and verify with my friends widow to verify I can donate them to this cause. They will most likely need valves, springs and guides, but will be rebuildable. I know I have 2 sets of 352 hipo heads, a few sets of 390 hipo and PI heads and who knows what else. I will advise soon on what I have and can have donated to this cause.

No need to start a new thread when a sticky's been up for such an extended period.

Ed...PM me with your concerns.

86 Sebring,
I need to take a little heat on this myself. I know most of you want to help Doug. Get his parts or donate to the fund to get his car finished. Personally, I have had my own "minor" medical conditions haunt me, Spring weather was a nightmare, making any progress in the shop slow and tedious. I hope to have less than a week to go to get all caught up with my priority type work.

Mr Mustang sent a new camera to me to replace mine that crapped out months ago! As mentioned, Doug's parts are in my shop still in their original shipping boxes! I have / had three other Cobras under construction, one Blown-Pro-Street '40 Willy's, and for you Chevy guys over 20,000 lbs of antique chevy muscle parts that are in my shop! . Everything from 409's, 454's, 427's, 396's and muscle 350 4 bolt's. Everything from the 60's to early 70's! My daughter asked me to help out her Mother N Law to sell her Husbands parts for her. (Most parts are now sold!)

Anyway, my shop is only 40x42. To say floor space is at a minimum, I think you can see spreading out Doug's "Dozens" of boxes with all the motors, thousands of parts, and cars under construction would be a total inventory nightmare!

So hang in there for just (hopefully) a few more days and I will post pictures of Doug's parts and pieces.

DV

I had hoped we would see a successful completion in a relatively short period of time. We raised a pretty good amout of money and many many cool and essential parts were donated. Not sure how or why the focus was lost. It would be great to see 767jocky in his car and driving with a smile on his face before the end of this year!!!

An update on the funds: some of the funds have been sent to 767 so he would have them available for the heads when he finds the right set. I still have about $1,350 in the paypal account plus $350 in cash for other items.

Let's get this thing done so he can drive it!

From what I have read on this post, the main wait is for the correct parts, for the perfect car, at an affordable price. As you can see, that does not seem to be working out very well.

I am sure that Doug wants certin things in/on his car, BUT, wouldn't it be better to have a car that you can drive rather than wait or all of the "perfect" parts.

JMHO, but I could be wrong.

BTW Doug, How are you doing/feeling?

Hi, Terry - I'm actually not doing too bad right now. It could certainly be a lot worse so I'm happy with that. As for the car, things are where they were, more or less. I scour the ads regularly for an inexpensive pair of heads, beside that the parts are more or less in place. DV tells me that there are many boxes of parts that many of you shipped over to his place, I have no idea what's there to tell you the truth. DV hasn't had an opportunity to go through them yet. I'm certainly not holding out for perfection on the car or the parts that go in it. A friend thinks he may have an old cast iron set of Ford FE heads that can be re-worked to fit the engine. He's not feeling all that well either, however once he's up and about he's planning on scouting his parts supply to see if they're in there and I'll purchase them from him once he finds them. I'll take whatever heads I can afford. These seem to be fine to me if he has them.

In looking at the reasons the car is not done, the weather was really bad out at DV's place all winter, and so far this year thankfully his shop has been busy with jobs that pay his bills. DV is making hay while the opportunity is there, and certainly rightfully so. I wouldn't have it any other way. Once all the timelines and weather factors fall into place, he'll jump on the car and get it done. As always, I remain so thankful and grateful to all for their amazing generosity on this project, I'm patiently and gratefully waiting for it all to come together while getting the health picture as cleared up as can be. Thanks again to all!

My recommendation is to make a full court press and get the damn car done (with the exception of the heads). as soon as they come in, pop them on and be done with it. Are we moving on this or not. If this were corporate America, . . jobs would be on the line to say the least.

Ever hear the expression "You can pay anyone to give you excuses". We need to find a way to succeed!!!!! Not sure where the holdup is, but if commitments were made and the full awareness of Club Cobra is behind this, we collectively need to put all the multitude of reasons for failure behind us and make this happen.

I am in Virginia and no longer retired, or I would go wherever the damn car is and wrench it myself.

Agreed. The car's gonna break down anyway (they all do)... so just get it together as best it can go and get it out on the road. Come on....

Old 390 junkyard heads costing next to nothing will probably last for 20,000 miles as is, right off the car and produce at least 350 - 400 hp. I would take that any day over no Cobra at all !!!! What good will the car do for Doug if he is 87 when he gets it? Just build it and let him enjoy it. If he is like the rest of us, he is gonna want to mod it over time anyway.
