Drew, I went through this with my older Contemporary that I am restoring. It was built in December 1983. My column is a MG column, and I had lots of play in it too. Like you I couldn't get the steering wheel off either. I ended up removing the whole column from yhe car, which isn't nearly as difficult as it sounds. Once the column is out, the whole inner column simply slides out of the outer column sleeve with the steering wheel still attached. I had lots of play in my column too. Assuming that you have an MG column like I do, the upper bushing is plastic, and the lower bushing, believe it or not is just some heavy felt that the lower part of the column rotates in.
