Default SOHC retrofit

Bob, I am intrigued by the fire-sale prices that SOHC parts can be had for right now. Long question short: how much work would be involved in converting this chassis to hold a SOHC motor? Mounts, primaries, footbox modifications... what else?

Gunner, there's a thread here on CC where I asked the same question. I'll try to find it. Full Throttle Al has a Cammer in his CSX and he posted some pics.

What fire sale of Cammer parts? I missed it? I'm interested in a Cammer someday too.

Cobra Make, Engine: CSX4083, NOS 427 SOHC, serial number 589. Dyno'd in 1967 at 629HP with single 4v 560 Holley. Now with 4 Webers.

The block is a standard 427FE so no mods to mount it but many mods to make it fit, the major one is to the foot boxes to make room for the heads:

A complete Dove kit, usually $22,500, is available for half that. $3k for an aluminum block to go with it.

I've always had an insane wish for a SOHC monkey... and it occurs to me that if I'm going to bother building a $15-18k engine for 707, I might as well indulge now while I can. Depends on next year being a good one on several fronts.

I am *not* OCD about... ooh, tunnel port!

You seem very "edge-a-ma-kated", so you've probably already have done your homework and know that there's been a enormous amount of negativity towards Dove's SOHC parts. The FE Forum has a ton of info and the preferred SOHC heads come from Bill Coon, the preferred block comes from Pond and there's more. There's a thread here on CC too, but the FE Forum has more info.

Jay Brown wrote an article in the August 2009 issue of Hot Rod that details what is considered the current optimal SOHC build.

The footboxes were extensively modified, as was the steering column. I hope we've still got the molds for the exhaust clearance cutouts somewhere. If not, the modifications don't look too hard with a little cardboard.

I think that the primary pipes were made as one-offs, no legacy tooling exists.

No engine mount change necessary, and I've got drawings for the alternator mount somewhere. It used a tiny Suzuki alternator hidden below the right head.

Bottom line, as much I love the Cammer and its look, I just don't think I have the heart to cut up my car. I'll keep dreaming, at least for now.
