Hot Rod SOHC article
I just got the August 2009 Hot Rod mag in the mail, nice article on the availability of SOHC parts and engines.
Did you see it?

Saw it and slavered over it.
This is my first post; checking out the kit sources brought me here.
I've had Corvettes (396, 427) and did some deals in stock and NASCAR 426 Hemi parts. Tired of NOS stuff and am researching a Cobra or GT build to ENJOY and wear out, if necessary.
My engine builder and mentor was a B-29 mechanic who retired from the USAF in 1957. He always said, "You will never be satisfied until you get a Hemi."
He was right. He's gone now, but I'll bet he'd approve of overhead cams.
Anyway, that's the tree I'm barking up, and with the Hot Rod article, I'll sure more SOHC fans are on their way.
Looking forward to learning.

I was just talking with Keith Craft via e-mail, and he said he has plans to build one.
I of course asked him "whuca gunna put it in?"
I would love to have a SOHC in say a 63 Galaxie.

Jay Brown the author of the article is a legend on the FE Forum. I got my copy of Hot Rod a few days ago and will start saving my pennies to put one together someday. New products are coming out to the market over the course of the next few months and years, so people interested in building a SOHC engine, like me, will be able to without paying the high prices for original SOHC parts.

One of the parts sources in the article, Precision Oil Pumps, can build you a SOHC right now. Doug Garifo, the owner, has built a couple in the last few months. He is great FE and SOHC source. Not just oil pumps but rocker assemblies, Genesis blocks, 482 stroker kits etc. etc. A real honest and straight forward business man too.

After paying about $5,000 for the Pond block, which is the block that is used for the buildup in the Hot Rod article and getting a set of Bill Coon's heads for $5,000, it's all down hill from there.

Didn't I read a while back that there were some serious quality control issues with the aftermarket heads for the Cammers? I thought I saw a few articles/threads about that......have the casting gurus resolved the issues on fit and finish or is this a different source.

I'll give another vote for Doug. Good guy and good parts.

I'm the guy on page 99 with the mini Spintron. I'm currently testing one of Jay Brown's Dove heads and yes, there are indeed some issues with it. Here's a little video clip of a rocker shaft bolt pulling out at 10,000 rpm (no, that's not a typo - TEN THOUSAND!)
http://s140.photobucket.com/albums/r...Spring1000.flv
The smoke is from oil hitting the very hot valve spring. Once the bolt pulled out, oil really started gushing out and created a cloud of smoke. I was able to shut down with no permanent harm done :-)

I am in process of building a Cammer right now for the 2009 Engine Masters Challenge.
So far I have spent every penny I have ever made and am spending future money at a rate that virtually guarantees a job in government at some point in my future...
Mr. "Endless Project" has been instrumental in testing out some new ideas and products for this effort. I have used his videos to motivate a couple suppliers to develop improved Cammer parts that will benefit anyone planning one of these in the future.

Which, in turn, virtually guarantees you'll never make enough to actually finish the motor . Your government job will have to become a politician - then you'll be able to steal enough to build several.
I'm not sure which is the sadder incentive here....guv'mint job or just spending all the kids inheritances.

Glad to see you here Barry! Just holler if you need any testing or part design done. I can't wait to see how that cammer does at EMC!

Put it in a Starliner? Naw that has already been done in Michigan.
No thread theft intended here, but the first time I went to the Woodward Dream Cruise I was at the Prime Media party, and went walking on the parking lot looking at a bunch of Fords on the parking lot.
As I am walking along, I see this Starliner with the hood up. I think "hey, you don't see a Starliner everyday", walking closer with one of the guys I am hanging out with, he says "HEY, THAT'S A SOHC MOTOR!
Now me, having all kinds of old rodder mags, putting two and two together, looks at the car and I say back "that is John Vermeersch's Starliner, with John Vermeersch's SOHC motor!!!" (You see I have seen that car in at least a dozen mags over the years).
My buddy says "There is John Vermeersch!!!!"
I see him, proping up a light pole by himself, so I jump the barrier, run up to him, shove my hand out for a handshake and say "your John Vermeersch!!!!"
John looks at me without expression, looks at my hand, doesn't shake it, and says "do I owe you money?"
He turned out to be a cool guy, and we hung out with him for 4 hours on Saturday at the Ford display. One guy looking for information walked up to John, and asked John if he could replace his 2 barrell carb on his 66 Mustang with a 4 barrell, John asked the guy (no kidding) "Do you know where the 351 Cleveland motor was made?"
The guy looked puzzled, and said "no, no I don't"
John said "no, the 2 barrell can not be replaced with a 4 barrell"
True Story!

Barry, if you're serious, then let (PM) me know. Probably outside my price range, but I have to ask anyway. I'm on Bill Coon's list.

Man, I was thinking of bringing back this thread today too.
I have read that "footbox modifications" and/or removing the inner fenders may be necessary to install a SOHC into a Cobra. Is this correct? I love me some Cammer.
Barry, can you disclose anything about your build or is it being kept a secret?
