Question Rear tie down location for IRS?

You would think with all of the towing I've done in the past I would know the answer to this one (all of my other trailers were always equipped with E track and Wheel bonnets). I'm taking my ERA out to the SAAC show at Hershey tonight, wondering in the back of my head if the rear axle strap placement shown in the attached picture will do any harm . Fronts are on the lower control arms, so I know those will be just fine, but the back just seems to me to be the only place to put them. Does anyone see anything wrong with this? If so, where did you put your rear tie downs on the chassis? My second thought was the rear differential carrier tubing, but that seems less likely the way to go.

Thanks,

Bill S.

Your car is just too old. The later rebuilt rears have a tie-down built into a bridge between the shock pivot and the lower hub pivot.

But I digress...

What you have should work fine, but would be better if you could cleanly thread the webbing on the arm outside the shock mount. Might not be possible with your setup though.

Too old, are you offering a free chassis upgrade to a loyal customer . How about a straight trade for a new 289FIA turn key (I'll take mine with a simple 347/5.0L Ford stroker motor)

As for mounting the straps on the outside of the shock pivot point, I keep it on the inside as I cross the rear straps to keep the car from potentially shifting on the open trailer. Something I never worried about with my E track and wheel bonnets.

Thanks guys, always nice to have a second eyeball when it comes to these things.

Default Dirt

Bill,

While you are under there can you clean up some of that dirt. I think that is why it has not sold.

But that is vintage dust and dirt, it makes the car more valuable as it shows it is lovingly driven (as I did at 6am this morning, maybe 40 degrees if I was lucky ) by it's current owner. Of course once it was on the trailer I did get a chance to use the pressure washer on it

I too have an "older" ERA and thats the way I do mine on the trailer. Towed it all the way to SAAC-35 and back, from Oregon, piece of cake.

By the way, ERA's are like a fine wine, they age very nicely. My car rocks and was a thing of beauty on the track. It's performance was flawless, it sticks like glue in the corners and I showed it no mercy!

My car is definitely an older ERA and I have welded hooks on the front and rear of the chasis to use for the tie downs.

lamaluv....i would use 2 straps to hold it in place.....if that one breaks or comes undune then your whole rear end is loose in the trailer.....use 2 straps that way if one breaks or comes undune you still have a strap on it....

10,000 pound strap but two straps would add extra safety margin. Good call, thanks Bob
