Congratulations on your find!! Can't wait to hear the details.

That was installed to control the flow to the oil cooler; I expect that under normal conditions the flow will be completely shut off: many have complained that the engine doesn't warm up adequately on the road with the oil cooler functioning. Peter P. said to just cover up the front of the oil cooler with cardboard, but that obviously won't do!
