  They have pretty well covered what to check for your speedometer, but one thing that wasn't said about the battery. Take a voltmeter and put it across the battery terminals.With the car running you should read around 14/15 volts. I never liked the amp gage and put a dash mounted volt meter in my car. If you are getting a low voltage reading with the motor running, ie 12/13 volts,then you have a problem with the charging system.
