Tilton starter question
When I pulled my engine this past weekend, I found the starter gear a bit chewed up as well as the flywheel. I think I have the wrong Tilton starter in there.
Summit and others list the same starter as correct for Ford small blocks, big blocks and FEs ( Tilton Engineering 54-10913 - Tilton Standard Duty Super Starters - Application - SummitRacing.com), but I don't think that's right according to the specs on how far the gear extends. See this article: http://www.gessford.com/cobraparts/i...otorquemax.gif. There is a 3/8" extension difference between the OEM FE starter (2 3/8") and the small block starter (2").
There are no part numbers on my Tilton, but the 3/8" difference looks like it would be the difference between fully engaging the flywheel and not, leading to my chewed gear. So I must have the small block starter in there.
So, who knows where to get the right one?
