Default Ideal water and oil temps.

Hey all

What would be the ideal water and oil temps for a warmed up motor?
Quick suvey of what temps are you all running at?

Thanks

I'm not going to offer up any numbers, but I will point out that the temperature of the oil and water is different in different locations in the engine. The temperature of the oil that is in contact with the underside of the piston is way, way hotter than the oil circulating around the temp sensor in the pan. So, if the desire is to "burn off" moisture and condensation, you can do that without ever having an oil temp reading anywhere near 212 degrees.

Water temp is water temp. It will vary depending on your location, how hot it is outside, and if you're idling or moving. We are speaking ideal numbers here, so I threw out 190-195. Wouldn't hurt my feelings if it were a little over 200, but I generally don't like to see engines colder than the former numbers....especially all-aluminum engines.

Oil temperature needs to be hot enough to burn off condensation. Modern vehicles run at around 220-230 oil temp. It's true that oil temp will be different in different points of the engine, but most of the time, water will condensate in the lifter valley and top of the heads.

On the dyno, oil temp usually gets to around 170-180 degrees, measured at the oil pan bung. We simply don't run them for 30-40 minutes non-stop though.

Dimis, to answer your question, the fam and I are doing well. I hope you are too.

Dimis, when I run my engine hard, I can get the oil temp up to 95C and the water temp up to 90C, when moving.

Are the temps being quoted with or without an oil cooler?

Again, just depends on where you are in the country and how you drive. I have Cobra customers who don't run oil coolers who see around the same temperatures as Patrick. I also have customers in the New England area without oil coolers who see temps around what I posted at the beginning.

Lots of variables.

If your car is not overheating in traffic, or seizing up, or even just catching on fire, then I don't think temperatures really even matter that much on these cars. Most of us are going to die of old age before we wear them out anyway.

My numbers are similar to Patrick. Similar engine, oil cooler, same region.

New England -- Oil and water run close at 180F. Oil will go higher if I'm running through the gears, but will drop on cruise [I disconnected the cooler]. Oil temp is taken in the oil pan I'm sure it's much hotter near the bearings. coolant in the intake. Coolant stays the same. 351w

My water temp is running around 80 C on the smith gage with a 160 F thermostat - no oil cooler on a 459 FE. Been meaning to change out to a little higher thermostat but haven't gotten around to it. Oil temp will get there eventually too if I drive long enough.

Thanks gents.

Just asking cos my temps pretty much have always sat in the middle of my gauges which is pretty much bang on what you've all said.

The other day however I had the car out for a little putt around town, and noticed the gauges recording fluctuating temps, both oil and water. Ranging from normal to slightly hot. I wasn't far from home so kept my eye on it and then shut it down before it got too hot. I also noticed the header overflow was actually overflowing, a little different to normal.

Anyway, after a bit of trouble shooting found the fan was kicking in intermittently due to a loose wire. So I work to sort that.

Thankfully it didn't get too hot and no damage done, but it did raise an eyebrow.

Thanks for all your input.
