Question Low riser intake on med riser heads.

I bought new Elderbrock heads, have low riser intake.The low riser intake has to long of passage ,is it worth while to epoxy them smaller or grind out head to make same size ? Will it work? Thanks ,Wheels.

I went through this whole dilema myself 5 months ago. I talked with some very respected FE builders and picked the brains of some very worthy guys here on the CC board.

I learned some do deal with this problem with epoxy, but that wont solve the fact that your runners are also too narrow by an 1/8 to3/16 ,and you are restricting the opening to your ports.

another problem with epoxy is, it wont raise the floor of your manifold and you will pool fuel ,you will run rich and your car will stink the place up ! It was also suggested to me that the pooling fuel could possibly grenade your whole top end ,or at least give you a fire that might be real hard to put out !

If you port match the heads (assuming you have enough extra metal) and you dont like the end performance results,(a real possibility) then you are stuck with heads that wont match a mid riser manifold.

You need one more inch of clearance for a midriser manifold,they perform better than the low riser ,they look better, and they are about 500$, ..........I bought an original on E-bay ,but you can get a real nice BLue Thunder repop for less.

Wht kill a good thing. The heads are great. The manifold is junk and won't work easily. Blue thunder and a little massaging is all you need.

Wheels, I ended up with the same situation, bought a 2x4 manifold to replace my Performer RPM single four...found out the manifold was a low-riser. I opened up the heads and port matched the heads and manifold, and WOW!, what an improvement over the 1x4. Note, though, that my dyno runs showed that the Edelbrock manifold was restricting my air flow, so maybe it was just the Ford 2x4 manifold. I'd do it the same way if I had it to do over again. I recommend opening them up, or (if you think the manifold won't flow well) get a medium riser manifold.

Junk? maybe it's not a C5AE. But it still out performes most everything else (8v) under $800.. Enless of course you are going the repro route.. then it's $550.. Or you could go with a Performer 4V.. Great performance.. But it isn't a dual quad.

Still I wouldn't try to match port the heads to a C3AE

I bit the bullet and ordered new repro. med riser from Carl's Ford Parts,couldn't see grinding my new heads to fit the low riser.thanks for your input.

Good move on the right manifold for the heads.

The "floor" or bottom of the MR intake ports are up for a reason. Flow. Modifying them by "lowering" the floor would defeat the purpose and spoil a perfectly good set of heads.
