428 rebuild questions
I'm getting ready to rebuild my 428. My engine builder buds & I will be assembling it. (we race sprint cars & built our last motor ourselves & it's kicking butt) !! Anyway.... I need to know more about FE's & what they need.- Iron head oiling needs, porting, valve size, guide size, ect....I'm buying chrome moly shafts, end stands & Earson rockers.(1.76) Buy the way, the reason for the rebuild... the #1 & 2 cylinder head water passages were filled with some kind of putty or silicone, the #1 cylinder got too hot, freezing both valves shut temporarily,( the thin tight tollerance brass guides swelled I'm sure) the pushrod had no where to go & bent it 90 deg.'s in the manifold & broke the rocker shaft (no end stands). I talked to a few Pro. eng builders & they don't know why the coolant passages were filled. Sometime, the front cylinders run too cool but, the damage shows they werent getting enough plus, I think the guides were too tight. : Block prep- Long story but, it has .030 pistons now & may need to bore again. Their is rust pits & piston ring marks from the motor sitting for so many years. The last builder either did not bore enough or thought he could just hone them out, I'll just have to see what the machinest says. Any & all suggstions, advice & help will be appreciated guys !
Thanks,
Kev
