The dirty deed is done! Red oil pan, blue block and white headers. Color me "Captain Cobra".

Fuel primed, 3 or 4 pumps on the accellerator, oil pressure pre-primed, all systems GO.

With the "pit crew" holding it's breath, I reached in and turned the key. About a dozen cranks of the starter and no fire of any kind. A hush fell over the crowd...

Bryan, Flip, Mitch, Vince, Ken and his daughter looking on as I stood there and scracthed my head. I KNEW with nothing in a dozen cranks something was wrong. OH,,, try plug in the freakin' distributor power wire, HELLO!

A turn of the key the second time and we were instantly greeted by the healthy blast of open headers as she came to life! OH YEAH, sounded SO sweet, a thing of beauty! 2000 rpm or so followed by high fives. Pictures at 11, I'm exhausted and need to clean up!

Thanks "pit crew", you guys are the greatest!

Ernie, the engine looks great and reallly like the color combo. Thanks for posting pics of the progress along the way. It was fun to watch. Glad to hear startup went well and good luck, Glenn.

Default Been Driving it!!!

Man,,,, it is indeed a thing of beauty! Starts right up, NO leaks (water or oil), pulls STRONG, idles a little rough, haven't tuned the carbs yet.

I also had the trans down and went through it. Excellent! Smooth as silk shifting, no strange sounds, stays in gear, etc.

I probably have about 50 miles on it. Time to retighten bolts and nuts etc. ALSO, time to put the inner valve springs in now that the cam is broke in nicely. Looks like the rings have all ready taken a nice "seat". Some clean up and interior work and I'm ready to rock and roll!

Just a note on Moroso Race OIL FILTERS (427 FE part number, 22470).

Gessford (George) recommends the Moroso Racing Oil Filter, which is what I'm using. Flitering out extremely small particles of 20 micons or so is pretty standard for most filters. This requires a very fine mesh filter which causes to much oil restriction. When the oil flow is restricted it "by-passes" the fliter via the internal valve built in to ALL oil filters. That results in NO FILTRATION at all.

The Moroso filters 27 Microns with an initial pressure drop of only 2.5 pounds. This assures full filtration under the most severe oil pressures typically seen with Big Blocks. Like 70-80 PSI when the oil is cold on start up. Less Restriction, More Flow!

Initially I ran the motor a little more than 30 minutes at varying engine rpm around 2000. Then a short drive around the block. Then I CHANGED the OIL and FILTER immediatly! The oil was all ready black (must be the Marvel Mystery Oil doing it's thing)!

Thanks Paul, it's sure is nice to be "back in the saddle"!

A few hundred miles on the new motor and so far so good! Runs strong, no leaks and SURPRISE, around 10 mpg. Thats up from 6 mpg! Much more street friendly, I cruise around in 4th gear a lot, motor pulls smoothly from 2000 rpm up to ?????, don't know yet!

Stop and go traffic, hot day, got up to 210 Deg F, no boil over and it was fine. It just keeps getting better! I'm thinking about doing the 1/4 mile soon. Old time: 11.904 at 121 mph New time: ??? ???

Up-Date for archival purposes on this thread:

Shifting at a conservative 5800 rpm heres the new 1/4 mile times.

60 ft 2.001 seconds
1/8 mile 7.869 at 94.5
1/4 mile 11.993 at 118 mph

Still trying to wipe the grin off... the new motor rocks! Totally street friendly. Starts right up, EVEN when HOT! Pulls away strong in high gear from 2000 rpm. Oh, and breaks the tires loose BIG TIME when I nail 2nd gear at about 60 mph. Gotta love that lower torque curve! Runs cooler and stays closer to 180 now that I "kicked up" the base timing to about 15-18 deg from the 10 I was running. HUGE over all improvement, better idle, exhaust temp lower, pulls away smoother, etc.

62 main jets and 9.5 power valve final settings.

Any word on the wrinkle finish? How is it holding up?
What did you use for it?

I know see that Eastwood has a wrinkle finish for powder coating too. Might be worth looking into for me. Anyone else have experience with it?

The wrinkle finish is holding up well and I think it looks great. Painting the oil pan (red) has not worked out well. The paint does not stick well to the alloy, I should have primered it first. I've had to do some touch up. Still, I don't care for the bare alloy look.

The chrome on my air cleaners is showing it's age, not shiny new. I'm thinking about painting them wrinkle finish black as well. Hey, if I don't like it, I can always repaint! Thats the one thing I like over powder coat, paint is quick and easy to re-do.

The new gauges look great! Now considering interior carpet options.

Glad to hear it's running well. I really enjoyed watching the build pics as things happened. Did you scuff the pan before painting to help the paint adhere? I agree that primer might have helped possibly. You have a very nice cobra ERA makes a great car. I'm leaning heavily towards them myself. G.

The last few posts to this thread were 'lost' with the recent crash\restoration of the ClubCobra data base.

Heres an up-date:

I have about 3000 miles on the engine now. The old Mallory Hi Fire was recently replaced with a new MSD distributor. The dual 'race carbs' also were replaced with brand new 'street' 600 cfm Holleys. The engine just keeps getting better! Runs VERY strong, nice and street friendly, it's everything I ever hoped for!

Whats next? I'm thinking I'd like to get a 289 FIA Cobra, hoping for a pretty accurate build in that regard. Nothing to 'modern'. Small block, top loader, IRS, stamped steel valve covers. The more 'period correct' the better!
