The original seal material for the FE was leather…
To keep from flooding the seal beyond it’s capabilities the slinger helped.
(It wasn’t perfect, they still wept a bit)

With modern seal design and materials the slinger is no longer really necessary, modern seals can handle it.
Having said that I still use the slinger out of habit – LOL
I have seen more than one that went together without it, no problems.
