Update
I went out and bought the finish line expansion tank and am working the install. I will post pics soon. I am hoping the snow ball does not begin to roll on this project.!!

a couple notes. I indexed it to the passenger side-cuz I run a ford radiator. I had the radiator shop put it together for me. $60. I did get tehm to use silver solder and braze the seems on the tank. My measurements indicated I had to place the fill hole to towards the rear of the car to clear the hood when closed.

So the Snow ball starts-The expansion tank pushes the upper rad hose farther to the pass side than my existing radiator likes. But the mock set up does clear my hood with at least 1/4 inch of clearance on my 351. And the alternator bracket did not need modification. Note you do wind up capping off the the thermostat bypass hose to waterpump.

OK so now I am in the market for a reasonably priced aluminum radiator tank. May be I can now use some of those tricks I saw on mdross and his radiator's sweet setup. More to come.

Try "Summit Racing" or "Jegs" I believe both carry Moroso aluminum expansion tanks.

I finished the project. A couple notes and lessons learned. The Finish Line tank is a little taller than I thought. Once installed the tank had less clearance with the hood than I liked. I figured this out the hard way. Engine cooled fine while hood open and when I drove it the tank would puke/leak. What was happening was the engine would vibrate and the cap would hit the hood breaking the seal and causeing fluid to leak.

I had to replace my radiator (I was drooling over the cool aluminum ones). The issue was the opening on the surge tank puts the hose farther over to the passenger side than expected. My radiator was a FORD radiator with a slight off center opening . I learned a little Shelby history. The reason the original Shelby’s used a Chevy style radiator was the lower radiator hose outlet on a Ford Style Radiator- would open up directly in front of the rack and pinion and had clearance issues. I ordered a cool aluminum radiator from CFR (Ford Style 24 x 17) I solved the lower opening by putting a different lower outlet that routed at an angle above the steering rack. Well I hope this helps those that go for the expansion tanks!! I have noticed a 10 degree drop in engine temp-likely a combo of more efficient radiator and the surge tank.

Interesting. I think I had purchased a Ford Radiator, either way, I'm now a few hundred bucks lighter and very good friends with an aluminum welder
