Default motorcraft ignitions failure

Hi there,

my name is Dennis i'm from the Netherlands and i'm facing some problems with my 460 Cobra ignition.

First some details of the ignitionsystem:

Motorcraft
i.d number: D8AE12A244AB
Duraspark ignition.

The summer of 2009 this car was running good. After the winter we've tryed to start this beast agian but it won't run. When i look at the color of the spark, its orange, normally it should be bleu (?). We've also checked the spark directly at the ignition coil. This spark is also orange. We've replaced the igntion coil without any results. So we've tryed new spark plugs....no result. the feulsystem looks fine to me because when we've dismounted the sparkplug i smelled gasoline.

Does anyone has a idea what to do next?

I am guessing that when you first checked the spark you did it with one of the plug wires unplugged and let it spark to ground. If not, then try that and be sure that your distributor cap top button that feeds the rotor and all is not burned and that the tab that makes contact with it is good. Look inside the cap for any carbon dust or moisture that may be shorting between terminals. If this is all good and no wires have been touched, then have the module checked. Also make sure that for whatever reason your timing is still set correctly.

If the car set for a long period the gas could also be bad but I kind of doubt that has anything to do with this problem. I always put Sta Bil in mine when they are going to set for over 2 months.

Hi,

thanks for the quick reply.

Yes i've checked the sparkplug with one of the wires unplugged and let it spark to ground. I've also checked the distributor cap for any corrosion but thats all looking fine.

I've refilled the fueltank with fresh gasoline but without any result.

conclusion: the ignition sparks but i think the spark is not strong enough to ignite.

I've heard that this type ignition is not very reliable. Does anyone has an idea which type of ignition is reliable?

what are you using for a module? msd? ford? is the module grounded, corrosion of the ground may be hindering efficiency

also if it has been sitting is there rust on the reluctor or stator. how old is the engine?
mileage?

Check Battery condition & VOLTAGE. As far as reliability; they were used on millions of Ford produced vehicles, so they have a proven track record.

Hi Dennis,
My experience with all ignition control boxes is bad ground wires. The ignition box burns out after the alternator spikes the voltage and the box is done.
I recommend multiple ground wires. Battery to engine. Battery to frame & body (on metal cars) and make sure they are good connection.
I use the MSD products and install the MSD 6AL with rev control on almost every car or engine package.
