Tom and I have been talking about this car for some time. I have the first of the non-FIA 289 comp cars that the Kirkhams built. I sent them many, many pictures of the rear flares on CSX2138 (Original Team Comp Car) to get them nailed.

This car differs from mine in that it has the wider front flares like an FIA (mine has slabside front flares and has spats being installed behind the front wheels as we speak). This car is similar to Tom Payne's red racer CSX2430 now in the Shelby American Collection. However there were no cars ever made specifically like this with the LeMans vents and the welded scoop (2430 has a riveted scoop) standard trunk and the joseph rear flares --- but it looks gorgeous and could make a really cool period correct looking 63-64 Comp Car.

Well done guys.

Mike

and the joseph rear flares ---
What is the origin of the wording joseph when describing the rear flared wheel arches...

Inquiring minds want to know...

Thanks.

"Joseph" was a Shelby America Employee in the 60's that added the wheel arch extensions to the Sebring and LeMans cars so they started calling them Joseph flares.

I would love one of these to add to my Kirkham 289 FIA Hybrid.

Just need to start saving.

Vintage photo of a similar comp car:

This was in Riverside, 1963.

Miss Calif Sports Car for October was Starlet Lori Campbell who added a nice dimension to the Riverside scene. In the background are Ken Miles and John Surtees.

Dave Dralle gave me a picture of CSX3020 when he raced the car at Riverside in 1968. The car was painted yellow with a big black x painted on the hood. The car was painted for Dave for free if the painter could paint his name on the back of the car. The name on the rear fender is: Jozseff's Body Repair in Torrance Ca. Dave confirmed to me that this was the same "Joseph" that used to work for SAI and flared the early 289 comp cars fenders.

Its so damn wonderful that you cant believe it" Automobile Magazine 2004
