The inspection for 2006 was done by a shop I use when I'm at work. Unfortunately for you guys here, he's in Brooklyn, near Coney Island. The Inspection was done as a SAFTEY Inspection. All I know, is that I was done in about 10 minutes..

My yellow VIN sticker was placed in the engine compartment on the firewall below and to the right of the driver's wiper arm.
Jim....All I can relate is I had the same exact occurrence. The mechanic was afraid to go any further fearing consequence to the VIN record. Having my NYS DMV application file folder with me I asked the mechanic to wait a few minutes and called Tech Saftery Division's Tim Noonan in Albany. Lucky for me he was at his desk at the time ! Mr. Noonan advised the mechanic how to correctly input the data. The result was a clear go ahead with PCV Valve inspection as the only requirement. Can you call Albany's Tech Safety Division for more guidance ?

If it doesn't snow tomorrow, I will be driving my SPF to work and will have one of the guys do a NYS Inspection. I will document the process here, so others can take it with them in case their Inspector has a question on how to enter the VIN, ect. on the NYS DMV computer terminal for a "Custom" NYS Inspection.

It would be nice to be able to get a 'duplicate' VIN sticker and place it elsewhere (on the firewall), put I would be very surprised if that were possible.

Anyone ever get one replaced? Not only is mine in a horrible spot, but when I get the car repainted one day it's a goner! Any ideas? Anyone ever done this before?

Hi guys
I have an attachment with info from the DMV on how to register a vehicle that is “homemade”.
Call Albany for the kit from the tech group (518) 474-5282 nice people
Keep all your receipts, pay the money and pray.
My car has been on the road just over 5 months – I lost the entire summer fighting with the DMV in Albany for my appointment to get my vin number – that said the tech group was very helpful and guided me through. If it’s a new build get the DMV info early so you know what additional parts you will need for NYS inspection.
The state is mostly looking for stolen parts – keep cool, keep records and do your homework. The state run inspection was a walk through – my yellow tag was put under the dash on a cross member. The regular state inspection looks at lights and safety equipment needed for the road, Albany asked for pictures, recites and id numbers for major and mandatory parts, approved lights, glass, etc. Albany wants its tax dollar$$$$ so keep an eye on what the car cost you and keep neat records – the less work you make them do the better off you are.

Did any of you guys buy your cars as rollers and try to register them or did you actually buy them as akit and assemble them .. a roller did you get an MSO with your kit that looked like a " certificate"

My SPF came as a roller (as all SPF do) with an MSO "certificate". The DMV used the MSO, the serial number of the engine I purchased, and the serial number of the transmission I purchased to establish a NY Custom VIN.

The link given above by Nickpz1 will get you started. Just give NYS a call at the number listed to get your information packet, so you can get started. The guys at NYS DMV Tech Services are very helpful - be sure to ask them any questions you might have, and they will help you out....

OK, here is the deal. My inspector called Tech Services in Albany and they walked him through the procedure. Had to only have emissions devices based on year of engine (1972) which was a PCV valve and pass a gas cap pressure test. Then I had to pass an emmisions idle test (tailpipe sniffer). Fortunately the parameters were from 1972: 700 HC and 6.00 CO. I passed and have no issues for another year. I'm curious what parameters they set for crate engines purchased new. Thanks for everyones help and input in this matter.

Guys,
My Snake is registered as a 2001 Custom and I need a SNIFF (IDLE) test before I can register it. I was told by Tech Services that all counties south of Rockland which includes Nassau and Suffolk will require the Sniff Test on all cars registered as CUSTOMS no matter what year the engine is. That is why we must write or e-mail our congressman to support the bill.

Exclamation Don't wait to write... NYS Assembly is back in session.

The NY State Assembly is back in session as of April 16th and the Transportation Committee could be discussing A.B.6484 at any time. Don't hesitate to contact the Assemblypeople in Albany. Visit the Support SEMA in New York website to find out what you can do. Do it TODAY!
