Canadians tend to not want to hurt other people feelings so we may be overly polite especially when dealing with someone for the first time. Many years ago I learned that when dealing with Americans, get to the point right away. You are not going to hurt their feelings, they want to know what's going on, even if it is bad news. There will be lots of time afterwards for chit-chat but get the business cleared up first.
