Hey you guys in America...what's going on over there with Volkswagen and exhaust emissions? How many cars are involved? What's the potential damage to Volkswagen?

No hadn't heard that when I posted. Early reports here (Australia) said that at that stage, the 'affected' cars were those diesels sold in America.

Hard to comprehend how big (ie expensive) this is going to be for VW!

I had an Audi 10 years ago and I sold it after six months because things kept going wrong with it and the dealer's interest level was sub-zero.

I had a Golf 30 years ago. The body was good and solid, the mechanicals were....sub-zero.

I didn't think VW's integrity level was this low and their arrogance was this high though.

Perhaps you should learn more and opine less . Besides, everybody knows the lousy cars get culled and sent there.

With the exception of the Touareg, sales of new diesel VWs are frozen for now, but I'd buy a used 1999-2004.5 Jetta or 4 door Golf if the price was right, for the sole purpose of converting it into a pickup. See https://www.facebook.com/SmythPerformance?fref=ts

OTOH, gasoline VWs are not affected by this, though VW dealers may get more aggressive on deals in order to keep their doors open, now that much of their diesel business has been taken away - at least for a while.

The costs for VW are going to be massive. I have seen numbers ranging up to US$86 billion (http://www.cnet.com/news/report-vw-s...horizon-spill/), and those numbers don't include the impact of class action lawsuits - many of which have already been filed. OTOH, the fear owners of a major negative impact to resale value of this debacle seem to have been over-blown - with some indication resale prices for TDI VWs have actually gone up (http://www.cnbc.com/2015/10/01/volks...ty-online.html). Perhaps they're speculating on the possibility VW may have to replace some of the cars, nor repair or alter them.

What is the base for such a penatly, I wonder? Did somebody die?
I would file for bancruptcy then and only build Bugattis..

Diesel emissions seem to be complicated. My expertise is on the petrol side.
