Anyone used Chantix ???
I have been smoking for about 39 years.:(
I'm very seriously thinking about quiting and I know I'll need all the help I can get. Has anyone here used Chantix ? What was your experience, did it work for you ??? |
Fred,
I used Welbutrin and it worked great. My brother also used it. Bernie |
Fred
I was at 2 packs a day. Had been smoking for 40 years. Then 19 months ago I had to go have two teeth implants, and the dentist said smoking can cause a lot of problems during the healing period. My sister said she had the same implant but continued to smoke ... and had all kinds of horrible infections and other problems. So when I went to the dentist for the implants (steel rods into the jaw bones), I smoked a cigarette in the parking lot. That was my last cigarette. Quit cold turkey. Threw out a carton of cigarettes. I amazed myself that I did it cold turkey. At that time, I had lost a total of 105 lbs over the previous 2 years on a diet. Of course, I've put 60 lbs back on ... snacking, especially at night. But I'm back on my diet because my butt is almost too big for the seat in the Cobra.   My sister quit about 5 years ago. She used the Nicorette gum. Good Luck Tell Frenchy I said HI. |
Thanks Bernie.I've put Welbutrin on the list to talk to the Dr. about.
Warren, you must have a remarkable will power !!! I'm not concerned with weight gain,I could use it. |
Smoking gave me two heart attacks.
What ever you have to do, do it. I havn't had a smoke in years and I do not miss it. |
Fred,
I was one of the few who have never smoked ANYTHING in my life. I have chewed on two or three cigars when kids were born but that is it. I just never did like the thought of it I guess. I am lucky that I never started. Good Luck and keep us informed on your progress. I think you will have plenty of buddy support here if you need it. |
My Dr. at the VA has been heavy on my a$$ for several years now to quit.
I just gave my Dr. a call there to see what they have available. Well, they just have the patches and gum,IF you sign up and attend their classes. Anyone who has ever dealt with the VA knows that the simplest thing involves half a day spent there, besides travel time. No Thanks. I'll have work on Plan B now. |

It was a lot easier than I thought. I had always talked a good story about quiting for years, but never did. I had a good reason when I quit - fraidycatitus. Like that TV ad of a few years ago when a father slid a picture of his kids into the cellophane wrapper of a pack of cigarettes .... you need a REASON to quit. And then just follow thru. If your kid(s) don't give you enough reasons, what about your Cobra ... or your Harley ... or maybe a picture of Frenchy crying when you're sick and all shriveled up. |

Fred; For me, I had to decide to quit "mentally" before I could quit physically.........I smoked about 1 & 1/2 packs a day for 16 years and then one day kinda out of the blue decided it was time to quit and I did just that, quit cold trukey..Didn't touch a cigarette for 12 years although my wife continued to smoke, the urge never left, but my mind was made up and I did it........ About a dozen of us (mostly high school classmates) have had a "supper group" for 30 years now, we get together once a month and have a supper and freindly card game, that was my downfall....... after 12 years, I began smoking only at the suppers once a month, and one thing led to another and in a few months,I was back to 1& 1/2 packs a day, that was 7 years ago.........Now I KNOW I should quit again, but the truth of the matter is I enjoy it too much to want to quit right now!!!!!!!!!! My health in excellent according to my last two physicals, of course, my doctor wants me to quit and I will sometime in the future, but, for me, the hardest part is to decide to do it............. Amoungst my friends, the ones that have had the best results were the ones that quit cold turkey........do what you got to do, but just do it.......... David |
Like Steve, I have never smoked anything in my life, but some people that I know who did and stopped, seemed to have better luck if they just quit. Several tried the different aids and most went back to it after a while, but the few who just quit without any help have never started again. Good luck Fred and I hope that you make it.
This is just an after thought but can I have your Cobra????  Ron :D |

I was a 25 yr smoker and when I was divorcing my kids mother I decided to get rid of another BAD habit, the guys I worked with gave me some help, they said if I quit for a year they would buy me dinner at any restaurant but if I didn't make it I had to buy them and their wives dinner, looking at about 75 dollars per couple times 15 was more than I wanted to spend so I quit cold turkey on fathers day 1977 and never looked back.My .02 worth.
lots of luck quiting it's hard but worth it. Carl:JEKYLHYDE :) :D |
I quit "cold Turkey" several years ago for health reasons...it was tuff since my friends and co-workers and wife smoked but in the end I persevered. Gained about 25lbs but have since lost and kept it off.
My Wife started the Chantrix program about 6mos ago after smoking for nearly 35 years. She hasn't smoked since and swears by the product...and hasn't gained any weight. |
With the VA Pharmacy not carrying Chantix, that left me to finding a Doc to write me up for it.
Went to a local "Doc in a Box" to see if they would do it. Didn't quite expect the response I got. She,the Dr., broke into a big smile and couldn't have been happier to see me get on Chantix and quit smoking. She was certainly a lot more excited about it than I was. There is a CVS store right next door.Went over and got the first month filled.Dropped back by the house to drop it off. Took "Day 1" at noon today !!!:D |

Good start. Now all you have to do is go thru day 1. Have you thrown away all cigs in the house, garage, cellar, cars, etc? I did an internet search on Chantix and found that a side effect is that it makes you YOUNGER. I can just see you in a few years .... open pic to get full effect .... |
"The most common adverse events associated with CHANTIX (>5% and twice the rate seen in placebo-treated patients) were nausea, sleep disturbance, constipation, flatulence, and vomiting. "
Oh I can see it now .... barfing and farting ... Good Luck |
Another good reason not to smoke
|
Congrats Fred and good luck.
We will all breathe better now that you have quit smoking. |
