I say, give these illegals a chance to get a visa.. give them an M16, M4, M9 or whatever you choose and send them to Iraq to EARN THAT $HIT!!!! Show us why you deserve to be in our country!
The biggest problem I had when I was in OKC is that 99% of these people don't speak a lick of ENGLISH!!!

I have suggested that too. You want to be a citizen, you have 2 options. Go through the process of getting a visa and waiting your turn, or join the military and serve a minimum term of 10 years during a time of peace or 4 years during a time of war. Prove that you want what this country has to offer, and prove you are willing to fight to get it. I also feel that if a man were to join the military, his wife and kids would get the same rights and citizenship. If he were to be killed, then his family stays, gets full military benefits, and he gets full military honors. He proved that he wanted to be here, he gave the ultimate sacrifice. But Congress will never enact such a law and Lulac would say that I am racist and just trying to kill Hispanics.

An aside, but you (plural) triggered a memory..
I remember my Dad (one of the original SeaBees) telling me that the US of Navy hired Filipinos as mess stewards on board ship, with the promise of US citizenship after X months of service.
Hell, yes! That's "my" kind of immigrant!!!

COMMON SENSE!, It's getting harder and harder to see any common sense in our government.
Just curious, how far will it go until folks make their law makers accountable?.

Hopefully not much longer.
I think the govt, renigged on a lot of it's promises to the Filipinos, and they still love us. I married one, and it was a job getting her here. Even though her grandfather was celebrated guerilla fighter for the Americans....LOL

Do you know how most of the refugee claimants enter Canada in the first place. Through the US. According to a US Immigration Officer, they fly into JFK in New York City and immediately head north and try to cross the border into Canada claiming this or that status. If they are successful they get into Canada and begin receiving benifits, etc. If they are rejected, they do not have to go back to their own country, they go back to the US. Many of these people would not be able to enter Canada directly but someone has figured out that they can easily enter by coming in through the US. I cannot state that this is 100% accurate but I was told this by a US Immigartion Officer at the Champlain, NY border crossing 2 years ago just before Canada tightened up it's immigration policies. At that time, there was a surge of people lined up at Canadian Immigation waiting to enter the country before the new rules took effect.

Isn't it amazing that millions of illegal people can enter the country openly and nothing can be done to stop them or deport them,. But try to get a car into Canada from the United States or one from Europe into the United states and the whole Govt. will be down on you.

Wayne, I did not know that! Obviously my information is years, possibly decades out of date.
Most of what I read came from my Chex-Mex cooking forum that I shut down back in '03.
Ironically, 75% of my members were Canadian! We had some lively discussions after 9-11, lemme tell yah. "Met" some wonderful folks.

I find that bs too. If you were not here illegally, then you would not be a victim of a crime here. Being the victim of a crime while committing a crime does not abolish your crime. As to the guy who was held at gunpoint, what crime is he a victim of? A member of the military reserves caught him committing a crime and held him. Sounds like he is the one who is responsible.

I spend a lot of time in the US and I have developed some wonderful friendships down there. My wife and I spend every weekend sailing on Lake Champlain out of Willsboro NY so we cross the border twice every weekend from April till October. Sorry to get off topic but isn't that what the Lounge is all about?
The bad guys know that Canada and the US have laws and unfortunately they are using them to their best advantage just like the illegal workers coming up from Mexico.

My company just recently served general notice, on their log-in computer system, that I will be receiving, via snail mail, a Form I-9 to fill out.
A little research ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I-9_(form) ) indicates this Immigration Reform and Control Act was passed in 1986. I either don't remember it or it has been so long I've forgotten about it. It seems like it is directed at illegal immigration and hiring thereof.
1986??? ...Why am I only getting this now??

Warren, I was also curious if I ever caught the same fish, Farm ponds are one of my favorites and I change lures often so, I wear nail clippers around my neck. Just before release I clip a small 'V' in the dorsal fin, haven't caught the same fish yet!.

Great Idea..just "Expand" on it.

As a 'legal' immigrant to this country, and now a full citizen (arrived from England in 1979!), I have to applaud the actions of the OK state government from a principle perspective. It took me an undergraduate degree, TWO postgraduate degrees and 10 years experience as a 'rocket scientist' (LOL...true actually!!) just to get a green card, and then after about 10 years I went through the lengthy citizenship process. In my 27 years of residence, I have paid well over $1.5 million in federal taxes and god knows how much in sales taxes, so I feel I have 'paid my dues' to be here and contribute to this thread... .
I am 100% behind the bill and the 'bravery' of the Oklahoma legislature, BUT...
...my ONLY issue here is that it will be interesting to see how the economy of Oklahoma deals with this legislation. IMHO, Oklahoma's economy is primarily agricultural and oil based...relatively little manufacturing or high-tech, and the agricultural economy of the US (at least in the south, west and central US) has traditionally relied HEAVILY on illegal labor to keep costs low. This will be a 'test' case for how well these legislations will fare in the rest of the country, particularly in the economic powerhouse states of Texas and California!
While the whole immigration issue is immensely complex, we should beware isolationism and xenophobia until we are confident that LEGAL Americans are once again willing to take on the jobs that we currently feel are 'below us', but are the very jobs which keep our economy running at its current economic levels and which allow us to reap the luxuries of the greatest consumer-based economy in the world.
Just food for thought in that while this is a wonderfully demonstrative and jingoistic measure, it may not be the ONLY solution we need!
Little in politics or human society is simple to fix !!!!!

GlynMeek,
You are absolutely right about it not being simple. The people of this country as well as your birth country made HUGE sacrifices in the forties. It may be time for like sacrifices for all of us again. We push out the illegals, and then we can control who is here. We stop the welfare checks of our citizens, and those recipients will get hungry, and eventually go to work.
I am not against immigration as I posted earlier. There is a need to knock on the front door, and ask for permission to enter. Those wanting to sneak into the back door at my home in the middle of the night will be the recipient of my 357.
Those here illegally getting hospitalization, welfare, water, food, fuel, and schooling are draining us. The bleeding needs to stop soon. I just want them to go through the same process you, and my wife did. A physical check up, a background check, to be sure they have a job, and won't become welfare recipient, and be able to do business in our language.
Absolutely there is a place for workers in the field, and other jobs too. They just need to be invited in through the front door. We should have similar rules that Mexico has in place for immigration.

I was told by a mexican that the rules Mexico has in place is to keep the lower class citizens from Central America out of their country and to keep them from draining the mexican economy, and it does not relate to here, because America has a strong economy, and Americans are rich, so they can afford it. I told him that compared to the Guatamalian, you are rich, so it is the same thing. You can afford to give some of yours to him and then he will have more without working for it. He now calls me a racist. I just laugh at him. The sad part is he actually immigrated the correct way, and I let him know that I respected that he did not take the easy road.
