Depending on which history book you check some say 1947 and some say 1948......go figure.........LOL
Bill France Sr. promoted racing events on the famous beach course at Daytona Beach, FL. France saw the sport needed organizing and so started the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) in 1947.
When NASCAR was formed in 1948, there was a definite shortage of new cars in the post-war era.

OK, I'll take a plunge here, the car directly behind number 5 has what appears to be a GM wrap around windshield, circa 1955 or later. I'll take a shot at 1958.

Recently met a gentleman who was a mechanic in the pits for the last race on the beach. He has a photo, which he took, of the US Air Force Thunderbirds doing a fly-over. F-86 Sabres by the look of it.

The Thunderbirds switched from the F-84F to the F-100 in 1956. The F-84F looks a lot like the F-86.

The car is a Ferrari, most likely a 375MM.

I would say that VRM is right. I thought maybe a Ferrari, but I did not know what model.

Joe, the version you posted is the 375 Plus. It has the larger gas tank (note the big bulge on the rear deck). The 375 Plus was the version that won LeMans in '54.

I can't tell if there are marker lights below the headlights in Earls photo or not, so it may be another model.
I think there were only about 20 or so 375MMs and 375 Plus made.

I think this variant of the 375 Plus is a bit closer (no two alike...pretend the road lamps aren't there). Note the slightly extended snout/smaller grill and the deeper-appearing (almost oval) headlamp placement...no marker lights, and the front valance comes up higher at the tires, like Earl's pic. Note Earl's pic shows a pronounced hump for the tank, and the engine vents on the side of the fender.

I can't quite tell if the fuel tank bump is there in Earls pics or not. There is something dark there, but I'm not sure if it is the fuel tank bulge or the fender of the car behind it. There is something that could be the right side of the downslope of the bulge, but I have not looked at it with my magnifiers. It does not look high enough in relation to the headrest nacelle, though.
There is also the fact that most of the 375 pluses were raced - although the amazingly attractive yellow with green interior car was not. 
Good point about the variants... Scaglietti, Pinninfarina, Bertone, and all those other coachbuilders just had waaaay too much fun!
I suppose I could lean towards the 375 Plus.

I blew up Earl's pic and lightened it up...it's the top of the double-layered hump from the Plus (the camera angle's low from the front)...definitely not the fender of the car behind it. Also, note the smooth hood...no straps/vents, indicating the longer snout-nosed Plus variant. I think that's a Caddie behind it.
I feel like a Ferrari geek.
