Default Painting my Mid-States !!

At last.
All of the body work is done.
Thanks to guys in our local Cobra club
for checking my bodywork.
A huge thanks to Chuck Brandt for the
use of his HobbyAir fresh air system.
Don't paint without one.
Sprayed two coats of the Evercoat SlickSand
on it. It's sweet. Hit it with 220 dry, then wet
with 400. Later in the week I will get the
primer-sealer shot, then blue, white and then clear.
Look's like I am officially one of Andy Dunn's
BackYard Bootleg Painters !!!
Best,
wicked fast

Nice looking paint. Did you have much trouble with dust, lint, critters.

Nice job on the paint!!! I'm in the process of doing mine. The deck lid is a real pain in the a__ getting it to line up. What did you use to mask the circles for the meatballs?

Thanks for the kind words.

I did get some lint in the clear coat. Used a hard rubber
block when I was colorsanding the clear to make them
disappear.

For the meatball I made a 10" arm with a nail for the
pivot and a pencil glued on the other end. Easy to
swing a 20" meatball. The 1/4" 3M blue fine line
tape works great for masking.

Default Hey Russ !!

Russ,

Thanks for the kind words.
I am one of the "ghost"members in the club.
Should be more involved with the club after
the car is done.

Look's like I stumped you on your car movie trivia.

I'm an idiot. If I would have take 2 seconds to read your signature more carefully, I would have figured it out (especially since I have the "Racing is Life" poster hanging in my garage). Regardless, the paint job on your Cobra kicks major a$$...

Sure looks good, Can you list the paint materials by name brand and the cost as well as the time its taken for you to do such a great job on it? I am assuming that you did this in your garage without the use of any filters or fans etc.? I know Id appreciate it. The last paint job I did was about 35 years ago. Things have changed a lot since then. Especially the prices...Thanks Michael

Well here goes.

Used the Dupont ChromaBase for the color and
clear. It was very easy to mix and spray.

Spent 50 plus hours doing the body work,
4 half days primering and painting.
Borrowed a 6hp 175psi 30 gallon compressor
and a Hobby Air fresh air system.
100.00 for various sandpapers,
75.00 one gallon of Evercoat SlickSand primer-filler,
100.00 for filler-primer in spray cans,
30.00 for clear plastic for the garage,
129.00 Sharpe Finex 300 with 1.4 tip,
850.00 gallon of blue, primer-sealer, quart of white,
gallon of clear, polishes, bonnets, reducers, tape,
masking paper, and activators,
35.00 to build a wooden dolly for the frame-body,
25.00 for undercoating,
30.00 for buffer at Harbor Freight Tools.
I also figure another 100.00 for the small stuff.

Hope that helps. Email me if you need more info.
Good luck on the Hi-Tech, they are great cars.

Best,
wicked fast

Someone at work said I missed my calling.
Problem is that I'm too slow for my own good.

Yes to your comp seat !!
That is a perfect solution.
I really didn't like the idea of the fiberglass shell.
I also drilled the holes for a comp windshield.
A good friend has already bought a set of flying
goggles to use when we go to the car shows
with the comp windshield on.
The seat will be the perfect touch.

Thanks so much for the info.

Best,
wicked fast

It's hard to appreciate the task of painting a car until you've done one (or more) yourself. I can relate.

Congrats on a nice job!
