Finally...New Avons are on!
I have had a few PM's asking some questions about my Avons. Thought I would post a pic and provide my first impressions after finally putting some milage on them.
For those of you that have ever complained about the hunting, flat spotted and simply tricky to drive Goodyears... go with the Avons! I am absolutely thrilled with them. They have no bad charateristics what so ever. Went for about 100 miles on Sunday with Karl and his ERA, all twisty, winding and at times very bumpy roads here in New Hampshire and my car was a completely different animal. No hunting, turn transition was non-existent... They are nearly boring compared to my "beloved" Goodyears. Next, we'll see how they handle on the track!
I just couldn't bare loosing the big letters and look that the BB's had so decided I would make some stencils that replicate the large letters on the vintage Avon slicks and sports car tires.
Thoughts????

I think I'm going Avon soon as well, for my street tires. I like the stencil letters, but, I'd be going with "Goodyear" myself. Yellow letters, my current Goodyear slicks are yellow letters and I really like that look over the white letters. I might add a couple of yellow "team stripes" to the front fender too.

What size are your tires?
Personally I went from BFG's to the Yoko Avid ST's on Unique Motorcars advice and was thoroughly amazed at the difference in handling . Did not like the YOKO's style white letters so I mounted the white letters inside,. I did like the BFG white letters though and they were mounted white letters showing. They also discontinued the yoko's recently, so I just got another set for the rear on ebay about 6 months ago. They are going into storage.

Well a lot of it depends on the tire itself. Bill Boards do NOT lend themselves to storage no matter how you do it. They just age like crazy. Out of the sunlight for sure, temperature controlled are storeage fundamentals. In fact, if I was thinking long term storage I'd put them in a opaque garbage sack to keep ALL light out. No way you want any weight on them, if there on a car, jack it up, get the weight off the tire AND the springs as far as that goes.
My first set of Bill Boards were brand new and within a few months started to crack all over the side wall. They were literally just falling apart before my eyes!! I'm thinking they were in deep storage in some wharehouse and somebody saw me coming (the basturds).

They are up on a shelf in the garage, stored vertically(on its tread). Not on wheels, so no air in tire, they are not exposed to light, but they are not climate controlled either.
I have seen the shows and videos, I am sure some of it is true but i am sure it is much exaggerated...I read somewhere tires don't even start to degrade until the 12 year mark. |

Goodyear Billboards are Bias ply "old school" tires with the large Goodyear writing on the sidewall. If you do a search for "Billboard" on CC you'll find a LOT of threads.

Excaliber is right.... no clue why, but my Goodyears aren't that old, still have plenty of tread on them but are cracked on the sidewall to the point that I was constantly concerned about driving on them safely. I spoke to Roger Kraus about this and he called it "Ozone Cracking". He did however say that it really does not affect the quality or safety of the tire. No reason to doubt him, just thought it time to try the Avons. Certainly glad that I did. As I stated above, the Avons are the best mod I have done to my car yet. They are nothing short of amazing in comparsin to my BFG's and BBoards.
The sizes, BTW, are 295's and 245's. No issue with fit or rubbing on the Contemporary.

What are specifics on these AVON'S you are talking about.
Are they an all season or performance tire? What model Avon are they? Where can you buy them? Speed rating?
etc,etc....
That would be the exact size I am currently running with the Yoko's 295\50- 15 and 245\60- 15
I was looking cat the Mickey Thompson S/T's last night. That was a muscle car tire with a speed rating of T (118mph)

Avons are street legal "race tires" and only sold by a couple of distributors. The East coast is Sasco Sports. They are model CR6ZZ
